I can't connect to any ftp servers  (eg. ftp.microsoft.com). EI7 gives the
"Internet explorer cannot display the webpage" message when I try to download
something.

If I go to the "menu bar" and select "view"->"Open FTP site in Windows
Explorer"
I get a message from "Internet Explorer Security" saying Windows Explorer
wants to open Web content.

If I allow this I get another message saying " Windows can't access this
folder..." the name maybe incorrect or you don't have permission to access
the folder.

I have checked IE7 Internet Options -> Advanced Tab and
"Enabe FTP folder viewing (outside outside of Internet Explorer)" is cheched.

I have tried all the sugggestions this and other groups have suggested but I
can't fix this problem.

Some of the things tried include:
-Turning off firewall, anit-virus software, User Account Control.
-I have Compared the Internet Options on the Security and Advanced Tabs with
another Vista PC on the same home network that doesn't have this problem.

Any help would be appreciate.

The PC that I am having the "FTP folder error" problem on is running Vista
(32) with IE7.

I have read about the problems with IE7 and going to ftp sites but the
strange thing
is that my other PC is runnig Vista (64) and IE7 and it doesn't have a
problem going to FTP sites. I just type in ftp.microsoft.com on the IE7
address bar and the page is displayed.

If this is an IE7 problem then it seem to me that I should have the problem
on both PC.

Check your router to be sure the FTP ports (21&22 I think) are open. You
should be able to connect with IE to the FTP site and then you go to View
(in IE) and Open FTP site in Windows Explorer to play with the folders. The
ftp url should be ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/

Hi John,

I'll check my router but I don't think it is the problem. I have two PC
running thru it and the problem only exists on one of them. The Vista (64
bit) PC works fine.

I have also tried to use "Windows Explorer" to open up a connection to
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com on the Vista (32-bit) PC but I still have the
"Windows can't access this folder the name maybe incorrect or you don't have
permission to access
the folder" message.

Thanks for the response.

Well I have resolved my problem. After going thru IE7's "Internet Options"
one more time, I discovered by trial and error how to correct the ftp problem
on my Vista (32-bit) PC.

The fix was to select/check the "Automatically detect settings" in the
"Automatic configuration" section in the "Local Area Network (LAN) Settings"
window.
(internet options->connections tab->lan settings).

*Note: My other PC (Vista 64-bit) didn't have this ftp problem and didn't
have the "Automatically detect settings" selected/checked.
