Hi
i have just installed the beta of IE 7 and noticed you CANNOT make the
classic toolbar on the top above the address bar - this is going to annoy the
hell out of a lot of users - most are use to the file "menu" being the top
most bar on everything including windows explorer!

please include the option for this!!

Sorry I misread the post.
The key you want is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001

I personally like the Classic Menu bar not being there.  When I 1st installed
it, it was not there.  Now for some reason when I start IE, the Classic menu
is there.  I have tried to uncheck it but when I close IE and restart it,
it's there again.  Is there a registry entry I can edit to make it hidden by
default?

John,

I'm sorry but that is truly terrible - there should be a choice to toggle
the menu position somewhere in the interface - or simply put it back where
every other program under the sun puts it and leave it alone.  Asking users
to go mucking around in the registry - I hope you have support lined up to
help them with registry restores!

I agree! This is a bonehead mistake on Microsoft's part - who was the
interface wizard who came up with this one? I mean, at least allow users to
move the Menu bar *back* to where it's normally positioned - on top of the
Address bar. Such a simple thing!

That does not put the menu on top of the address bar, which is what nikon is
complaining about.

John mentions in another post... to move the File menu to the top:

The key you want is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001

How can I install that key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001

I don't know where to place it or what I have to do with it. I would like to
have the classic bar above the addres bar.

Create a new text file any write the value:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001

save as IEfix.reg (with the *.reg extension)

double-click on it to load it into your registry.

I am trying to do this, but I get a message box saying it is not a registry
script.  This is what I try to save:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001

Am I missing something?  Thanks

I have also tried to add this key as suggested below but get the same error
message? How do you add this key?

You can add this key to your registry manually if you want. I suggest making
an 'Export' of your registry beforehand in case of any mishaps.

Probably best to close down IE7 before making this change; I didn't and it
didn't seem to matter, but better safe than sorry. Click 'START' | Run... and
type regedit to open the Registry Editor.

Starting in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER] drill down through Software > Microsoft >
Internet Explorer > Toolbar until you get to 'WebBrowser'.

You'll see a number of existing keys here (mostly REG_BINARYs probably), but
you want to add a 'REG_DWORD' here. Just right-click on the right-hand screen
and click 'New' (actually the only thing you can click) and then select
'DWORD value' from the drop-down menu.

This creates a new key with the name "New Value #1", just edit that to
"ITBar7Position". The new key starts with a value of 0x0000000 (0), which we
want to change, so right-click on the new key and choose 'Modify'. In the
filed 'Value Data' change the '0' to '1' and click OK.

You should now see:

ITBar7Position        REG_DWORD       0x00000001 (1)

Close the Registy Editor and restart IE7. You should now see the File | Edit
| View toolbar above the IE7 Address Bar. (It also puts the Links toolbar
over the Address bar as well, which I would rather have beneath it, but
that's a small matter at the moment for me.)

Hope this helps. I worked for me but as always with Registry changes, use
this at your own risk.

If you want to make a .REG file, you have to be sure to begin the file
properly.
Here is what the complete contents of the file should be:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser]
"ITBar7Position"=dword:00000001

Then save this file as WHATEVERYOUWANT.REG, and double click to merge the
contents into your registry.

I am not a computer expert.  I am just a very annoyed regular user who wants
her freaking menu bar on top.  I do not want to have to force it through
techniques I am only vaguely knowledgeable on and am most likely to screw up.
IE7 just needs to allow me to drag the menu bar up.  I do not understand why
this is so hard for them.  They can design a search engine, but can't give me
the option to put the menu bar where it is supposed to be?  For goodness sake.

Who do you work for, pcbutts? <eg>

The (classic) Menu toolbar *is* available in IE7.  Why you and everybody
else in this thread can't seem to enable it is anybody's guess.

If running Vista, see
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/d6576c88-2137-42b5-a154-ce21

If WinXP, see IE7 Help | How do I display the Internet Explorer menu?; or
click on TOOLS (in Command bar) and check MENU BAR.

So to whom are you responding?  You started a NEW thread.  Duh!

"I AM A SW PROJECT MANAGER"
Sure you are.  We believe you.  Uh huh, sure, yeah.  Professionals in
the software industry always post in all caps.  They always intersperse
a slew of multiple asterisks and exclamation marks throughout their
documents.

Next time, YELL LOUDER.  You're too far away for us to hear your
screaming.

Well, it took awhile hunting for the message-IDs in the References
header of projectmanager's post.  I should've started at the end of the
References list.  From that one, I found:

 http://tinyurl.com/5oy76h
(Google Groups copy of what is left of the thread)

From the last message-ID (4EA2C9EC-FE72-49AA-8154-2DEE16CF1511
@microsoft.com) in the References header in projectmanager's post, it
was clarity's post to whom he responded.  So we have projectmanager
posting today against clarity's post dated over 19 months ago (Nov 22,
2006).  Wow, this projectmanager is really on top of things, uh huh.

Yeah, it happens.  To be fair, I bet that I've responded to a couple of
ancient posts, too, because I didn't check the datestamp.

IE7 is something new!
There is much more space now, I find it ok. You can press ALT-F (for
example) and you will see the menu. It is a nice feature.

Huuuu????  You mean it USES much more space. 3 lines just for the
menus, compare to this -> http://home.chello.no/~larse/Browsers.jpg

Nice menus :D
But all what you need from the classic menu is also available on the browser
(without the classic menu).

As an aside to what Nikon is saying, when I first launched IE7, I saw no
menu, it was only after having to explore the "Tools" dropdown that I found
an option for a classic menu. I think this option should be part of the
install wizard or enabled by default. In addition, I would like my menu bar
above my address bar like in IE6 as Nikon says.

I read the other replies in this forum, and MS seems to be fidlling witht he
userinterface just for the hell of it. Menu's have *always* been at the top,
they're the next-to-invisible set of all commands nicely lined up. Because
every app has them, that's why they work so well.

What next, the File menu will not have new, open, print and close items on
it? The authors of the old Windows UI Guidelines will be turning in their
cubicles!

Perhaps we could put the status bar at the top too, as a toolbar next to the
Links bar, or the vertical scrollbar on the left, or the OK/Cancel buttons at
top right? No? Think why you don't do these things, and then hopefully
realise *why* the menubar is placed at the very top.

Thank you for reading this, Microsoft UI designers.
