Scanner Program Won't Start with IE7 Beta3 Installed

I am running XP Pro, SP2 with all updates on a Dell Dimension 8200. After I
installed IE7 Beta3, my scanner program, HP Photo & Imaging Director, will
not run. When I try to start it, the executable, "hpqdirec.exe", shows under
the  processes running in Task Manager, but does not show up as an
Application Running. The scanner itself is fine and is recognized by Windows.
It's just the application.

The program runs fine under IE6. I have installed and uninstalled IE7 three
times to validate the problem. Each time the program runs under IE6, but not
under IE7. All my other programs seem to run fine under IE7.

Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone have any ideas what might be the
problem or how to fix it?

Many thanks

The HP addin program should be disabled in Addons. Obviously HP's program is
not compatible with IE7. Check with them for updates or go back to IE6. Did
you try the IE6 emulation file that fools websites into thinking you are
running version 6? Here: http://www.fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx

Mary,

I tried your suggestion, but it didn't help. The posts suggested by
"jonathan" below did lead me to the correct answer, although not a solution
at this time.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Many similar complaints were posted and you should have found them before
starting a new unnecessary thread here. Try a search with the term 'HP
Director to find them.

No solution seems available and some have restored IE 6 to end the issue.
With scanjet 2400c manual scan with the button on the scanner worked and
brought up secondary software, but the HP P & I Director could not be made
functional.

johathan,

Many thanks for your response. I found the answers I was looking for. I had
tried to search for previous posts, but I just hadn't used the right keywords.

It may also help to search in a more relevant newsgroup.
Unfortunately the most appropriate one is not available
on the web portal you are probably using.

<excerpt from="previous post">

If you'd like to use the web interface to access the proper newsgroup
you would need to use a different portal such as this one.

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.
public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan&cat=en_US_9CA88DDB-D18D-FA0E-A366-6E527B0FBA
67&lang=en&cr=US

Or just use a real newsreader, such as your Vista's Windows Mail app
by copying and pasting this link into an IE Address bar

news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan

In OE this would create a news account and open it in that newsgroup.
You might want to customize your account before posting with it.
Hopefully WM  does the same; otherwise just use the server name
and the newsgroup name separately in whatever way they do allow
them to be used.  Similar parsing of the above URL would need to be done
by most newsreaders other than OE too because it is not a standard syntax.

In any case I suggest that all users of the  Help  portal
who want to post to common newsgroups such as this one
and the other 5 at the bottom of the list here

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx

consider also crossposting to  Vista General Discussion  too.
That way you will probably give your post a better targeted readership.
It will also allow Vista users to find your information by searching there.
E.g. when  Vista  posts are made only in the provided common newsgroups
all of their information may be lost to Vista users who only try searching
on their Help portal.

BTW  to find out how to cross-post using the web interface
you can use the Help link and then do a find for  Advanced options

jonathan,

FWIW - the problem with "HP Director" does NOT exist in IE7 Beta 2. I
uninstalled Beta 3 and re-installed Beta 2 and everything seems to work fine.

I'll wait for Beta 4 and cross my fingers.

Just for the record, you're not the nicest guy on the block, are you?
Sometimes people are new enough to these venues that they just can't come up
with the term that is going to get them a response the first time around;
that's when these groups are really show what they're worth.  A little bit of
kindness goes a long way - it may be you some day!
