Now that I'm using IE 7 I can't access any FTP sites.  Pop up blocker is off,
phishing filter is off.

When I uninstall IE 7, and go back to 6 I can get right in.

Hi Dave,

There is a setting in Internet Options on the Advanced tab - Enable FTP
folder view (outside of Internet Explorer)

As it says outside of Internet Explorer.

You can use the Windows Explorer (Shell) to enter a ftp:// protocol in its
address bar, but you have to include a logon parameter value.

The easiest way to establish a ftp connection is to add it to your Network
Places folder. You will see the "Add Network Place" wizard in that folder.

Regards.

The setting in the advance tab is already checked for enable FTP folder view.

I don't know what (shell) means.  I try and log on like I use to and still
can if I go back IE 6, by entering the address in the address bar.

If I add someone else's ftp site (there are dozens of our customer's sites)
will it still work, and would I have to do that for every site?

Does anyone know how I can just put there address in the address bar?  Is IE
7 going to fix this?

Hi Dave,

No - IE7 does not support the ftp protocol in its address bar for security
reasons.

The Shell browser is the Windows Explorer - Explorer.exe

Are you a web developer? What html authoring tool are you using? FrontPage
supports ftp, just select Folder view and you can drag and drop files from
your windows explorer (explorer.exe) to your server.

There are plenty of FTP clients that you can use (hummingbird comes to
mind - unix, linux)

Okay,
I'm getting confused.
I just want to access a clients ftp site.  Like I did with IE 6.  I type in
the address in the address bar where you would put a url.  A box pops up, I
put in my user id and password, to access their server, NOT mine.

If IE doesn't support this then we'll have to digress back to IE 6 until it
does or switch to a different browser altogther.  We like IE and we want to
keep using it.

I hope we're just not communicating very well and IE 7 will allow FTP
connections and browsing like IE 6 did and does.

This is a bug in IE7. If you run a packet sniffer under IE 7 it will reveal
that after logging in to the FTP Server, IE7 will issue a CWD / command to
the remote server before generating a directory listing.

While this will work if a) your home directory is also the 'root', or b) you
have access to the root, it will not work if your home directory is something
like /usr/webdrive/ and the system home directory '/' is locked down with no
access permissions. If your home folder is /usr/webdrive/ and you log in with
IE 7, IE 7 will try to CWD / instead of CWD /usr/webdrive/. Since you usually
do not have rights to / the FTP server will return a 550 Access Denied to
IE7. IE7 sees this and aborts because it believes you do not have rights to
access the server.

I can also verify this behavior because our company sells an FTP Server,
Titan,  that has to handle this special condition just for IE7.

The current workaround is to use FireFox, NetScape, IE6, or use an FTP client.

I keep reading about the "add network Place" but I can not find it in vista.
Please advise as to where I locate this in Vista so can add FTP and upload to
my web site.  Thanks!

Hi,
In Vista it's a Network Location. To setup your FTP site...
Open My Computer. Right-click in the My Computer window. Select "Add a
Network location." Work through the wizard.

You may be able to include the accouht name and password in the URL, such
as:
ftp://name:password@someftpsite.com

Hope this helps,
Don

Ok Dave and Gary,

Persistance pays, with covernants.

Here is a blog that explains ftp:// protocol support in IE7 RCI.

http://blog.paulpehrson.com/2006/06/07/ftp-in-internet-explorer-70/

Now, after you have read the blog, it will explain to you that you must use
the Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) to navigate to a ftp site, not IE7
(iexplore.exe)

The covernant to this statement is that you must use explorer.exe
(Windows/Shell explorer) for secured ftp sites (by secured I mean ftp sites
that require logon access). If your ftp site supports anonymous logon (no
user name or password required) then you can use IE7 (iexplore.exe)

For example

ftp://ftp.leo.org

will open the site in IE7 when entered in its address bar.

Ok. I just made a discovery. Do this

Type this in IE7's address bar

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com

This will load the microsoft ftp directory into an IE7 tab window, displayed
in html format. Now on that page you will see this message

To view this FTP site in Windows Explorer, click Page, and then click Open
FTP Site in Windows Explorer.

You will find the Page menu on the Command bar (the toolbar with icons on it
to the right of the tabs). Click on the chevron of the page button and you
will see the menu option "Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer". When you click
it Windows Explorer will open and display the directory in the familiar
Windows Explorer Format.

Ok. What about secured ftp sites.

If you enter ftp://www.mysite.com (mysite is any site) in the IE7 address
bar it will display the
"Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message.

Select the Page button on the command bar and then the "Open FTP Site in
Windows Explorer" option. Windows Explorer (Explorer.exe) will open and
display ftp://www.mysite.com in the address bar, but there will be not files
or folders displayed in the files list.

Select the File>Login As menu option and the Login dialog will be displayed
where you can enter your user name and password to gain access to the ftp
site.

Like the blog above explains, there are a few extra steps involved in
gaining access to a secure ftp site, but I am quite happy with that. As a
web site owner the last thing I would want is for a user to mistype my web
address and prefix it with ftp i/o http and find they have free access to my
web site. (This is possible if the web master allows anonymous access to the
site)

I hope this explains it all. OMG. I'll admit its a bit confusing. The Page
button - "Open FTP site in Windows Explorer" menu option is not obvious.

I hope also that I have educated you on the difference between Internet
Explorer (iexplore.exe) and Windows Explorer (explorer.exe). OMFG.

Like I said in my other posts here. The simplest way is to set up shortcuts
to your ftp sites in your Network Places folder in Windows Explorer.

Regards.

Rob,
I followed everything up to:
"Select the File>Login As menu option and the login dialog will be displayed
where can enter..."
I can't find this anywhere.
I tried it with the options "Open FTP site in Windows Explorer" and I tried
to follow the blog's directions and neither worked.
I can't find File>Login anywhere.

Rob, Sandi

I read your links but to no avail.

Every FTP site i go to, Content Advisor said.
Content Advisor will not allow you to see this website.
This page may contain some or all of the following: This page does not have
a rating

Yes, i'm trying to access the FTP:// using explorer.exe

I tryed it with content avdison disabled, enabled with "users can see
wabsite that have no rating" and still nothing.

Enable content advisor and see for your self. FTP access it faulty with IE7
RC1

Hi All,  With a little help from other forums i managed to access an FTP://
site with IE7 RC1 installed,  After deleting part of the registry that stores
content advisor it all worked.  So there's a faile with IE7 RC1 accessing
FTP:// sites with after content advisor have been initialy enabled.

for the record i deleted
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Ratings,
I deleted everything  exept the (Default)REG_SZ and it all started to work.

Any of our clients that use our FTP site seem to have the same permissions with IE 7. With IE 6x and previous you could enter ftp.server.com, you are prompted for your user name and password then you have access to your "home" folder. Now when that is done you have access to the complete ftproot folder and it's subfolders. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks,

gbarttram (and any smart person):

Your smart,  and I'm near-sighted and ignorant.  When I could not access my
FTP site, my cable provider told me they couldn't help me until I went back
to IE6. The problem I have is that I've been struggling with IE7 since last
July 2006, about a week after I replaced my hardrive.

Tired of paying for web pages that I can't access, I uninstalled IE7  and
the supposed auto roll back to IE 6 occurred.  Alarms and buzzers went off
and suddenly Windows was claiming my keyboard was going to damage XP and
digital signatures didn't match on the "Morrowind " mods.  From the Microsoft
built -in sirens, bells, and smoke alarms it was time for me to put my
hard-hat on and look for a bomb shelter built in the 1950's.

I had a copy of my original data files for Morrowind, and I also found the
original driver CD (sans the updates) for the key board.

I uninstalled the keyboard and replaced the the Morrowind Data File, then
after I did a system restore ,  I re-intalled the out-moded keyboard software
with its 1995 CD.

The System Restore decided to change the name of the Data Files  to Data
Files 2, and brought back  the file with all the mods with msismatched
digital signatures, that were all added after the restore point chosen.

After the System Restore, I have something that looks like 1E 6, but  it
reads IE7 in my control panel.  I only have an address bar,  I do not have
acces to menus...no matter how often I right click near the address
bar...there's nothing.

I would have made this a new thread, but I can't do that.

As matter of fact...there's not too much I can do at all.  I can't download
from the internet...and I have no tool bar to set my internet options.  I
can't re-download IE7 or IE6, and a System Restore isn't bringing back the IE
tool/menu bar.

I am in big trouble.

Sandi,
Again I followed the directions from your link and when I go to windows
explorer and click on file I see no Login As, not even grayed out.
And yes I did go in a check the FTP box in IE.
