After successful install IE7 trying to reach "page not found"

IE7 final release version after a successful install is trying to reach a web
page that is returning a 404 Page Not Found error.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005

It tried to reach this on first reboot after install; and each time you
start IE7 thereafter, but the page is an invalid address. IE7 can go
successfully to any other page on the Internet, so it appears this page just
is a real 404 error.

Installed on Windows XP SP2 over a the most recent beta release of IE7 (r2).

I'm a Microsoft Partner, just trying to help debug.

Just installed IE 7 -- same or similar problem?

It keeps wanting to start-up and connect to

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005

but can't connect, runs-and-runs, etc.

I want it to start at my "Home Page" which is a file of HTML design residing
on my computer -- I have that file designated as Home Page and can get it to
function from Home button

but clicking on Desktop or Quick Launch icons starts a "run-amok" search to
reach

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005

any help???

OK, finally figured out a solution. Deactivating the Phising filter did not
solve my problem, so I TURNED OFF in Windows One Care (which I subscribe to
for Virus/Spyware protection) both my Spyware scanning AND my firewall. Then
I closed IE7 and restarted it and IE7 was able to reach web page at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005 successfully. All is well now.
IN my case the conflict and bug is being caused by Windows One Care firewall
or Spyware, not sure which since I turned both off. I did not turn off my
virus protection so it wasn't the bug cause.

I had the same probelm.  I turned off my anti-virus programs (Trend Micro
PC-cillin) real time scan and was able to connect to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005 .

I have had the same problem, especially where there are multiple links to
follow on a site.
I installed IE7 on two different system and found the same problem.
I then reinstalled IE6sp2 and all links work.

My website:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sleepingancestors/Index.html

has multiple links but only the first link would work.

I have been told that there is a workaround and a patch, but have not found
the patch, yet.

Be more specific?   FWIW I pressed tab to enter that page, opened the link
tabbed to in the background (e.g. using Ctrl-Shift-Enter), tabbed to the next link,
opened it in the background, tabbed to the next link, opened it in the background,
(so, that's three links in a row successfully opened) and then quit testing
such a vague assertion.

Patch about what symptom?

FYI  OP's link (now?) redirects here;

http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx

So, if there was a bad link when it was first reported it has now been fixed.

If you are observing a bad link too, it would be better to stick with that
simpler hypothesis and notify the site's administrator.   ; )
