Looking for a solution to this problem.

IE7 can't do it.  Use Windows Explorer instead.

If I use windows explorer I can't upload files. Only the download works
allright. I wonder why this is so, does the new I. E. do/change anything
to/in windows explorer? although I really like the new I. E. this is serious
problem.

I can upload quite happily with Windows Explorer.  If you can't, there are
quite a number of freeware FTP clients.

Is FTP supposed to work with IE7 Final? I'm talking about the Page->View in
Windows Explorer thing.  When I click on that button, it just says "This FTP
site cannot be viewed in Windows Explorer.  FTP never worked for me with IE7
in the beta nor in RC1, but I have read (I think) the Page->View in Windows
Explorer works for a lot of people.

I think it's a bug in I. E. 7. As there is the page ->view in explorer-thing
it is supposed to be working, and I'm surprised many people can make it work
as you write; it doesn't work for me, and many people in this newsgroup have
confirmed this problem lately. Some people suggested to use an I. E.-Addon to
fix it, but I can't find any integrated Addon. There are only external
ftp-solutions as far as I can see. I wonder whether anybody really can use
this view in explorer-button.

@David
yes, I've been installing fireftp in firefox due to my problems yesterday,
and though I initially had problems with this new addon too (as I mentionend
in a different thread here) I could solve this problem and I'm happy with
that simple and effective solution now for most purposes (except the one
described above).

In fact fireftp turns firefox almost exactly into what I. E. 6 was combined
with windows explorer.

Works fine with this site:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/

If you can't open it and need help describe what happens when you try
to open it.   Watch for changes in the Title bar, Address bar, Status bar
and window data area.

Not needed for above site but it works too.

I suspect it is only needed when you need to authenticate.
E.g. notice that the  File, Login As...  command is now available
only in the Explorer window, no longer present in an IE window
even when the protocol prefix in the Address bar is  ftp:

Another factor is whether something could be blocking that protocol
or the ports it uses, e.g. a firewall or a proxy server.    You might be
able to circumvent such interference by toggling related options such as

Use Passive FTP  (for firewall and modem compatibility)

(in Options, Advanced tab, Browsing section)

This is a bug in IE7. If you run a packet sniffer under IE 7 it will reveal
that after logging in to the FTP Server, IE7 will issue a CWD / command to
the remote server before generating a directory listing.

While this will work if a) your home directory is also the 'root', or b) you
have access to the root, it will not work if your home directory is something
like /usr/webdrive/ and the system home directory '/' is locked down with no
access permissions. If your home folder is /usr/webdrive/ and you log in with
IE 7, IE 7 will try to CWD / instead of CWD /usr/webdrive/. Since you usually
do not have rights to / the FTP server will return a 550 Access Denied to
IE7. IE7 sees this and aborts because it believes you do not have rights to
access the server.

I can also verify this behavior because our company sells an FTP Server,
Titan,  that has to handle this special condition just for IE7.

The current workaround is to use FireFox, NetScape, IE6, or use an FTP client.

open my computer, right click anywhere in the file, choose add a network
connection, follow the menu prompts to create and ftp connection.  This was
the only way besides the command prompt that worked for me.
