How do I remove the bar saying my security settings are at risk?

How do I get rid of the annoying yellow bar which comes up
each time I click on a web page and says "Your security settings put your
computer at risk.  Click here to change your security settings...."

I didn't need Microsoft telling me what to do in IE6 and I surely don't need
them holding my hand in IE7.

When I allowed Microsoft to "fix" my settings, I couldn't see the content of
my web pages or my e-mail in Outlook, so I re-set everything to enable under
the Custom Security settings.  Then the annoying yellow bar comes up each
time.

What I am asking is how to get rid of the yellow bar?  Is it an add-on that
has to be disabled?  What can get rid of that annoying thing?

Is this on XP Pro?  If so, IE7 has added a number of group policies, one of
which controls this.  To modify this policy, run gpedit.msc and change the
policy at Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Internet
Explorer->Turn off the Security Settings Check feature.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your help, as this did solve the problem.  Of the Security
Features, which one of the following list (that I disabled) do you believe
was directly responsible for the yellow line?  In other words, I don't want
to disable any features that did not cause the problem.

Here are the ones I disabled:

PROTECTION FROM ZONE ELEVATION
INFORMATION BAR
RESTRICT ACTIVE X INSTALL
RESTRICT FILE DOWNLOAD

One of these did it, but I don't want to disable any features that were not
directly responsible for the problem.  Do you know which one of the four is
the item I can keep disabled while enabling the others?

Thanks again for your great help!

None of the above.  You want to *enable* Administrative Templates->Windows
Components->Internet Explorer->Turn off the Security Settings Check.

Of the ones you disabled, it would have been the information bar, but now
you won't see that in any situation, not just the security setting prompt.

Run gpedit.msc (only works on XP Pro).  Once in the group policy editor, you
want to *enable* Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Internet
Explorer->Turn off the Security Settings Check.

Of the ones you disabled, it would have been the information bar, but now
you won't see that in any situation, not just the security setting prompt.

You could try merging the following into your registry and rebooting:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Security]
"DisableSecuritySettingsCheck"=dword:00000001

If you merge that into the registry, it will create the folder for you.

The easiest way to get rid of the security warning bar is to click on it and
select the option to "Fix Settings for Me..."

My gosh that is lame!

I have the same issue, want to disable this check in XP home.

No I emphatically am not going to let MS set my security settings for me.  I
just want it to shut up and go away.

If it involves removing a registry entry, will hijackthis do it?

Otherwise, a workable solution in plain english or it is uninstalled...

Oh and meta-moral for MS - nagging is the eighth deadly sin.  Nagging =
layoffs.

Sincerely,

JasonC

Hey Tom-
I just went through all the posts about remving the IE7 Info Bar and you
seemed the most helpful. However, everything is all broken up and hardly
understandable. I am NOT running Xp, My pc crashed and ended up with Vista &
IE7- I too received and error code when trying to run gpedit(never heard of
that before this past week) and this info bar is driving me MAD! I have
scanned the regedit everywhere and seriously am dounting my abilities with
the computer.  I do not like microsoft "winning" and making me feel as if I
cannot handle the security on my own PC-those MAC ads are starting to make
sense!!

Any help would be appreciated

I have XP Home and adding that to the registry worked. I had to add a new key
for "Internet Explorer" and then "Security" but that was fine.

Thank you so much, Tom! That was the most annoying thing.

Tom,
How do you merge?

Thank you very much Tom!  I was FINALLY able to quit wasting my time trying
to find a way to turn that trash off!  I could NOT believe that!  It's being
asked all over the net, and no one knows how to turn it off!  Except YOU.  I
can’t believe the number of dweebs answering “it’s for your own good; you
don’t want to turn it off”.

Hey Microsoft...what's the point of making something configurable if you are
going to nag them every time they click a button!!!???  How about different
versions?  One for advanced users, who want to tweak their own settings, and
will live with the consequences (wait, doesn't Firefox do that??), and one
for the inept.  The one for the inept could be marketed to those who love
“free” puppy dog and butterfly screen savers and those who believe they’ll
soon be making $5000 a week from the comfort of their homes over the
internet.  It’s easy!

You shouldn’t have to hack the registry or group policy to turn it off.
Pull your heads out.

But I digress, thanks again Tom!

Tom -

I tried this and got an error message when I tried to run gpedit.  Windows
cannot find this file.  Really, why is IE7 trying to take over my computer
with this stuff, and why don't they make it easier to turn this off!  I'm
very confortable with my settings and I've run this way for many years with a
third party firewall.  Actually, the only reason I still use IE is that some
websites don't work very well with Mozilla or Firefox.  Other wise I wouldn't
still be using it.  So much for winning me over to Ie full time - When
Microsoft makes it this difficult to use their product the way we want, they
just perpetuate our stance.

Tom,

I don't see that option in the template. There are 2 levels of
configurations: Computer and User. In Computer configuration>Administrative
Templates>Windows Components I see only Windows media player and Windows
Update. No Internet Exporer!!
Inside User Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components I see
only Windows media player. Nothing else!!
What am I suppose to do to turn this information bar off?
I have XP pro sp2 running.

Thanks,
Agrawal

Hi Tom,
I have the same issues except I have Windows Vista.  I'd like to know why
microsoft thinks we ought to be censored or need their help to navigate the
Internet?  Somebody's going to hack their way through anyway!

I'm not at all happy with this new "security" they've made mandatory with
new computers.  I'll install my own security!!!!  We install popup blockers
and then every time I go to a website a popup asks me if I want to run Active
X - just get out of the WAY!  So, how do I edit my registry to get rid of
Mommy Microsoft?
