I appreciate the quick response to my win98 and IE7 question. It has brought
up another question...how long will I be able to run IE6 and what is the site
to Foxfire? Thank you!

You can use IE6 on Win98 as long as you want, the only problem is there'll be
no more security updates for it on that platform so your chances of
downloading spyware and/or viruses increase.

You can get Firefox here:

http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

They have a support forum as well should you run into any problems:

If you download Firefox, you will regard that it is a bloated pig with
lots of memory leaks. Try Maxthon for free. You will thank me later. ;)

How does it compare to Avant, which works under the same premise as
Maxthon (ie on an underlying IE engine)?

Answer.    No.
Question.  Does top-posting make sense?

I trust that you realize that Maxthon uses IE, and that it therefore has
all the security problems that IE has:  and because the OP has Windows
98, which MS no longer supports, the problems will never be fixed;
indeed, the problems will increase as more and more security problems in
IE are discovered.

By using Firefox the OP can improve his security somewhat, since Firefox
is updated frequently to fix any newly discovered problems.

Nope Maxthon can use either the IE engine (Triton, I think it is
called), or the Gecko engine (same as Firefox).

And whether you update or not is pretty meaningless anyway. As all you
need is a good AV, AS, and firewall anyway.

Now here is where Firefox (and other non-IE engines) fails. 99.999% of
Firefox users are totally clueless that AS and the like doesn't protect
them one bit. I ran Ad-Watch (and others) and it protects me running
under IE and Maxthon (using the IE engine), but totally naked under
Firefox! If I was a Firefox fan, I would warn everyone about this
because you are far worse than IE users running protection. And that is
the truth. Even if you don't update Windows at all.

as, av = antivirus, antispyware

must be different ways to get similar protection
i've got router, software firewall, av, spybotsd teatimer, HOSTS, proxomitron, (and win
defender on one computer)

using any browser (kmeleon, seamonkey, ie, firefox, opera, maxthon, and tried a few less
known) no attack problems other than occasional false positive.

my impression is that statistically most attacks are via net or infected files, but i 'd expect
keeping the os patched is better.

Whoa is someone really uíng Windows 98 common now I suppose that you have a
very old platform computer am i close, well then. That aside if your
processor is a p2 or better then you doing the right thìng by updating your
IE experiance depends on what you are doing on the Net... What types of sites
downloads experiances you wish to engage in.. The ability of Windows 98 to
support all the new scripts, java with its limited upto date library will
eventually become over burdened. I for one agree in principal why doesnt 98
continue to recieve updates well do you plan on passing your computer to the
next generation? I can not imagine your procsssing time to down lóad some of
these sites available today even with a fast link.. Old Mules die hard I
suppose...
If its working dont fix it right, well best experiancing online as you can
keep those av as programs running foxfire or browsers really dont make much
difference unless your security is not uptodate Best Wishes
