The only option for 'save as...' is html. No option for jpeg, bmp or anything
else. As we use genealogy sites for census pages, this is a huge set-back. We
use standard XP with all current updates. Help!

Hi Wanderer :-)

Also try the following and see if it helps:

The solution that seems to work for about 98% of such problems the time:
IE-Tools-Internet Options-Delete Files (in the TIF section)
Clear recycle bin to finish getting rid of the files.

Another possibility is that you have may need to set the image association.
XP users can  use the following command in the Start>Run>command window to
restore default graphics file associations:

   regsvr32  /i  shimgvw.dll

also..

1. Open Windows Explorer. Navigate to any one of the image extensions you
need (i.e., bmp, jpg, png, gif, etc.)
2. Highlight the file
3. Click on Tools on the toolbar>Folder Options>File Type
4. Scroll down the list of file extensions until you come to the one you
want the file to have (jpg, bmp, png, etc) and click OK and close out of
Windows Explorer.

or....

To restore the default file association, go to
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Download, unzip and merge the REG file, "JPE/JPG/JPEG Association Fix"
Some image/graphics programs will change file associations.

also...

In this case these tips won't be ablte to help. He cannot save that page
as picture because *you cannot save pages as pictures* there's no option
for that.

Ahhh.....I misread the OP, I thought they were trying to save images, not
the entire page.  Thanks, for the correction. :-)

hi... I downloaded IE7 just a few days ago and I'm having this saving problem
with images... I can only save them in .bmp format... I did all what Jan Il
suggested below, but still IE7 continues to save images only in .bmp
format... actually, when I right click over an image, the pop-up menu says
"save photo as..." and not "save image as..." as it used to in IE6... I have
XP w/ SP2 fully updated... and I it is in french, don't know if it makes any
difference

thanx

None of the TIF and re-registering the file commands work with mine.  I think
it is an update issue.  I do this stuff every day and now I have to change
the extension after I save it.

What is the most annoying is that the animated GIFs are instantly killed.  A
funny is not so funny anymore.

What has MS done to us?

Remember, the "work arounds" are NOT a solution, nor is an incompatible
add-on issue.  No matter what I do nothing assists.  I have rebooted so many
times the dog thinks I am nuts and will no longer come to me.

Hi,

As a test, turn on the Windows Firewall and disable your third-party
firewall, security suite and other security/ad-blocker programs. One of them
is probably causing your problems.

Just to qualify the problem, I want to capture an image on a page, not the
whole page.
In IE6, if you put the cursor over the top-left corner of an image, you get
a floppy disk
symbol so you know it can be saved.
Thanks to those who tried to help.

I wrote my last reply before trying Erwin Ried's suggestion. He is absolutely
right and I can not think why I did not try that! Thanks, Erwin.
