Installed IE7. It defaults to msn.com as the home page no matter how many
times I remove it and add another home page. I cant seem to get rid of it as
the default. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi,
These and other third-party programs can lock the IE homepage. Examine the
settings of security/privacy/antispyware programs for a disable option.
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks and/or Teatimer
Ad-aware Pro
Norton AV 2006
Spyware Blaster
Spysweeper
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be resolved in later versions.

If you don't wish to dig through settings of whichever security/privacy
programs you have installed, you could startup in Safe Mode, change the
homepage then restart. But... it's a good idea to check these settings
occasionally.

Hope this helps,

To change your home page
Your home page is displayed when Internet Explorer first opens or when you
click the Home button , and it can consist of either a single page or a set
of pages.

To set the current webpage as the home page

To make the webpage you're currently on your home page, follow these steps.

1.. If you have not already done so, open Internet Explorer and go to the
page you want to use as the home page.
2.. Click the arrow to the right of the Home button , and then click Add
or Change home page.
3.. In the Add or Change Home Page dialog box, do one of the following:
a.. To make the current webpage your only home page, click Use this
webpage as your only home page.
b.. To start a home page tab set or to add the current webpage to your
set of home page tabs, click Add this webpage to your home page tabs.
c.. To replace your existing home page or home page tab set with the
webpages you currently have open, click Use the current tab set as your home
page. This option will only be available if you have more than one tab open
in Internet Explorer.
4.. Click Yes to save your changes.

Hi Smirnoff, thanks for the advice, but I guess most peole on this chat would
already know that. Problem is it doesn't stay.

Yes, I realise that now.
Apart from general advice about (temporarily) disabling third-party stuff
and add-ons, have you tried CWShredder?
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/
CoolWebSearch could be the problem.

Install the Google tool bar and you can select your home page permanently
and also have a button for an alternate home page

If, say, Norton AV 2007 is the reason I can't change my Home Page I will
not stop using NAV, nor will I jump through hoops to get said page
changed.  I, simply, will lay the blame where it belongs and refuse to
use IE7.

These programs are doing what they're designed to do- block homepage
changes, if that feature is enabled. Users simply don't realize that a
third-party program (which they voluntarily installed) is the culprit. These
programs do the same thing with IE6 if the homepage lock is enabled.

Thanks. Tried the security settings with no success. Started PC in safe mode
which allowed me to delete the home page. Restarted normally tried to set new
home page, would not let me, kept defaulting to the blank page. Went back
into safe mode, set the home page, now it works fine apart from openeing up
twice - which at this point I can live with. Life seems to short to have
spend time in front of a PC fixing c...p like this!

Happy days!

Robbo - I had the same problem when 1st using IE7.
Managed to fix it this way.
Open IE7
Use the black arrow next to the 'House'.
REMOVE,  REMOVE ALL, home pages.
Go to your home page.
Black arrow again, Add Change Home Page/s,
USE this page as your only home page.
Restart IE7.

Good luck

Robbo and John R, just to keep me happy, please run CWShredder
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/

CoolWebSearch is a known Browser (Trojan) Hijacker.
SpyBot S&D does scan for certain versions of it but CWShredder is the real
business.

I too have the same problem. Smirnoff ran the CWS tool and it found nothing...

Something has the registry key locked. I deleted the Start Page key and
tried to recreate it and as soon as you name it Start Page it gets removed.

I have yet to find which program has the lock on it. Wish there was a way to
see what processes are locking it.

Just found the problem it was the Norton AntiVirus portion of Norton Internet
Security 2007.

It is set to alert anytime an attempted change is made but it wasnt doing it.
