Bruce Hagen - 14 Nov 2006 06:05 GMT Well, give it a try. It helped me and it should be done routinely anyway.

You might want to check how your computer's time is set down there - it seems to be running an hour ahead of time?

Nope, my computer was set an hour slow - should have looked!

Bruce Hagen - 15 Nov 2006 15:17 GMT I'll just repost what Michael said:

You have nothing to lose by Defragging except a few minutes.

IE7 is fast
Dean - 14 Nov 2006 14:31 GMT I notice many similar posts include "Internet Explorer cannot display web page" message. But noone has mentioned what I have observed with my dial up connection. The connection icon in the taskbar indicates a large amount of outbound (sent) data is occuring and very little inbound (received) activity. This happens after a few minutes of connection. The inbound data indicates 2K-6K bytes of data per second occuring. This basically ties up the connection and everything (IE7, Outlook, OE) comes to a crawl. This started happenig after IE7 install but I do not have to have IE7, Outlook, or OE active. Last night it occured with Automatic Update downloading files. Every few minutes I would terminate the connection and re-dial. The download would continue at a decent rate until the outbound problem reoccured. Suggestion: Check your ISP connection data to see if you are experiencing something similar. Dean

Dean - 14 Nov 2006 17:04 GMT I reran my Virusscan (no viruses), I have ZoneAlarm Firewall active. I suspect Microsoft may have installed something with IE7 that sends data to MS servers. That's what it smells like but I have no proof or ideas how to determine where it is going.

Do you have the anti-phishing turned on? Doesn't it check with MS every time you call for a page?

Dean - 14 Nov 2006 17:46 GMT Phising is the FIRST thing I turned off and Disabled as well. Is there any diagnostic tool to determine what data is being send and where it is being sent to?

KJSacramento - 14 Nov 2006 23:49 GMT I have the same - a great deal of outbound data, but I had a greater amount of outbound than inbound with the old version of IE6 as well, whether I was sending anything or not. I always assumed that antivirus scans of software, email downloads, updates and who knows what else have to send out a ping or data to the online site that keeps it current. What I do notice different, is that BOTH have increased about 1000 times from the previous version even with minimal activity. I also get the "Internet Explorer cannot display web page" message for hours on end. I am going back to IE6. I also made a comment on the Multiple Home Pages - hit home and they ALL go back to home and the only Home that retains its history is the first! I also am frustrated with the expanded-view-only option on the adding to favorites. I am done and going to try some other manufacturers' browsers like Maxthon Tabbed Browser and FireFox that have been recommended.

I had the same problems with browser/tabs opening very slowly. I disable the Sun Microsystems browser add-ons, and IE7 flies now. The only add-ons I had were Microsoft, Flash, Symantec and Microsystems. It works fine now.

Perry Rufus - 07 Apr 2007 19:48 GMT I had just the same after installing Vista - IE& very slow. However, it sped up as soon as I turned Protected mode off! Seems like an inherent flaw judging by the number of postings.

RealGomer - 26 Aug 2007 00:42 GMT I have WinXP on 2 PCs and WinMCE on a laptop. One PC is wired to a DI-524 router, the other 2 are 802.11g wireless to the DI-524, then on thru a Cisco DSL router. On all three IE7 is substantially slower than Firefox or Opera. Kinda makes me think the latest "patch" actually bunged up IE7. Yes, phishing filter is off and so is windows authentification, whatever that is.
Signature I know enuff to be dangerous.

The amount of time it takes to open IE7 is horrible. I have defragged. What is the resolution? I have plenty of memory and space. I deleted all my cookies and history.

Leonard Grey - 08 Dec 2007 19:13 GMT Funny...IE 7 (on XP) flies for me. What do you suppose could be behind our different experience?
Did you install IE 7 on Windows XP SP 2? You may have an incomplete or damaged installation if you did not carefully follow the pre-installation preparation described here:
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install.
If so, uninstall IE 7 (which returns you to IE 6) by following these directions:
"How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177
...and...
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html
and then re-install IE 7 following the directions above. Rather than installing through Microsoft Update, download the IE 7 installer from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx
and install directly from your hard disk.
Third-party add-ons for Internet Explorer, such as ActiveX controls and browser toolbars, can cause problems if an add-on is damaged or if it conflicts with Internet Explorer 7. Many add-ons need to be updated to work correctly with IE 7. To determine if your problem is caused by an add-on, run Internet Explorer 7 in 'No Add-Ons' mode:
For Windows XP: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)
For Windows Vista: Start > type Internet Explorer in the Start Search box > click Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons)
Test Internet Explorer to see if it works correctly. If the problem still occurs, move on to the next step. If the problem no longer occurs, one (or more) add-ons is causing the problem. In this case, use the Manage Add-ons tool to determine which add-on is causing the problem:
1) Open Internet Explorer 7 > Tools > point to Manage Add-ons > click Enable or Disable Add-ons.
2) In the Show box, select 'Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer' to display all add-ons that are installed on the computer. For each item in this list, select the add-on, and then click Disable under Settings. When you have disabled all the items in this list, click OK.
3) Exit and then restart Internet Explorer 7 > Tools > point to Manage Add-ons > click Enable or Disable Add-ons. Now enable a single add-on, then exit and restart Internet Explorer 7 to see if it works properly. Repeat until you determine which add-on causes the problem to occur.
After you have used this process to determine which add-on(s) causes the problem, disable that add-on or uninstall the software that installed the add-on. In any case you should contact the vendor that provided the add-on for a solution, which usually includes uninstalling the add-on and replacing it with a version that is compatible with IE 7. (Sad to say, some software developers have still not updated their software, preferring to blame Internet Explorer for any problems their users encounter.)
A performance issue or an error message may be caused by inappropriate configuration settings, which can be fixed by resetting Internet Explorer 7 to its default (i.e., original) configuration. Although this solution is quick, it will also disable any add-ons, plug-ins and toolbars that are installed. If you want to continue to use any of those add-ons in the future, you'll have to reinstall them. To reset Internet Explorer 7 settings:
Open Internet Explorer 7 > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset.

Jessie - 03 Feb 2008 18:52 GMT I've tried everything you all said, & IE7 still fu&*ing sux. It's slow, I get cannot display page, & I'll get that stupid page at least every 5 minutes I try to go anywhere else. I don't have malware, I have a great virus protection so why does it suck so bad? I soooooooooooo miss IE6, but if I go back to that, I won't get the updates for various programs anymore. Sucks, sucks, did I say, it sucks?

You can uninstall IE7 and automatically revert back to IE6. Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.
If you want tabbed browsing and anti-phishing with IE6, download the Live toolbar (http://toolbar.live.com)
Regards.
