Useless back button

I am using IE7 after using Firefox (god forgive me) for several months.
Maybe I am just used to the way that software works, but what is the only
thing that is really bugging me about IE7 is the useless back button. When I
click back, I want to go back, I don't want to redownload the page, or get a
'webpage has expired' message - I want to go back, to exactly how the webpage
was before I went forward.

I can't be the only one who is annoyed that any input fields are wiped if we
make a mistake or loose the connection - so my suggestion is, make the back
button do what it is suppose to do, and not reload the page, but just go back
to how tha page was.

Thanks

The page expires because the web page author designed that way, not a problem with IE.
Many pages that use input fields are designed to expire if you go back as a protection of the user's
data.
IE is just now enforcing the security rules with version 7.

I'm having the same problem with a simple asp.net 2 application. The
interesting thing is that on my local machine there is no problem but when
accessing the website from the ISPs server then there is a problem. The
client browser (IE7) and machine are the same and the application is the
same. This suggests that there might be something in IIS that might be
different? These web pages do no have an 'expire' clause in the HTML HEAD.

I am having the same problem as ProfessorPiggy.  It just started in the last
month or so and it is driving me crazy.  The back button constantly takes me
to the webpage expired message.  Happens mostly on shopping sites.  Contacted
one webmaster and they said it was an ISP problem!  It's interesting that it
constantly happens with IE7 and infrequently with Firefox.  Haven't been able
to locate any support information that has helped to date.  If it can't be
remedied I will definitely make Firefox my browser.

Check your IE settings under Tools>Internet Options>General>Browsing history>Settings>Check for newer
versions of stored pages

Make sure it's NOT set to Every time I visit the webpage. I would suggest trying Every time I start Internet
Explorer.

I tried your suggestion and it seemed to work for a few minutes but that is
all. Tried other options available there except for "never" but none worked.
Am still having the same problem today.  It is so frustrating!!!  It has
certainly taken the fun out of browsing/shopping.  I am not a novice computer
user and have always been able to remedy a problem but this one has me at a
loss.   I recently updated my Norton Security Suite but I was having this
problem before that, I think.  Am ready to uninstall Norton and try McAfee.
I'm sure it started happening after some update of something or other.  I
find it hard to believe that more people aren't having this same problem.
HELP PLEASE!!!

How big is your browser cache? You may wish to increase it's size. Note that many shopping sites use
dynamic content and it's not going to work regardless of the browser/settings you have.

My browser cache is at the max of 1024mb.  What is strange is that I have
been shopping these sites for years and have never had this problem before.
Why all of a sudden?

Because the site (or if a caching server is involved, an intermediate node
in the path) changed the headers or otherwise changed the cacheability
of the page.

Unless you can use the Back button in Working Offline mode
(e.g. press Alt-F,W before using Alt-CursorLeft)  the page is not cacheable.
Then checking/re-requesting the page with all the built-up form variables
will give you that message.

...

>>> Tried other options available there except for "never" but none worked.

"Never" is what you could have tried as an alternative to setting  Work Offline.  ; )

Use  FiddlerTool  to see why the page is being checked/re-requested
and what the server/intermediate cache is doing in response.

I tried Work Offline and Never, neither worked.  I don't have FiddlerTool and
am not familiar with it.  Searched it and was going to download it but I'm
not feeling comfortable with it.  It seems a little above my expertise level
although would not be afraid to try it with guidance.  Would it help remedy
the situation?  Would referring the site's webmaster to this conversation be
of help?

Some pages CANNOT be cached. Any chance you can supply a link to the page(s) that are causing this
problem?
phansee - 18 May 2007 01:28 GMT
This happens throughout this site as well as others.  Here is just one link.
Choose the item size and color, add to shopping cart then hit the back button
to choose a different color of the same item.  Webpage expired message
appears.  It just doesn't do it when placing items in cart either.  Just
navigate through site, do a search, check out items, shop... etc. hit back
button frequently.  Like I said this happens on other sites as well.  This
may not work as a link but is the address for one of the many problem pages.
Thanks!

Link does not take you to intended page.  Just shop the site like I suggested
and use back button frequently..

This is pretty typical behavior for query-based web sites. The page is dynamic and cannot be recreated
without executing the original query so the developers expire the page. You can't blame the browser for this.

As I said, I have been shopping this site for years and this never happened
before.  So if I understand you correctly, the developers must have changed
the site and there is nothing I can do to remedy this and/or is it because IE
just started enforcing some rules!?  Thanks for your input!!!

I haven't been able to reproduce the symptom at that site.
E.g.  (surprisingly)  Back  implemented by the browser works.

Often you have to rely on the site's UI providing a Back button
(e.g. in the page, implemented using Javascript).   I even saw
an example of that on one of the pages I got.  Do the pages
which give you the problem symptom have a Back button in them?
If so, use them.   Alternatively, use any other link in the page which
effects the same thing.   In fact, depending on how a site is designed
using its Back button will give you better functionality (e.g. better
potential for saved values and field focus) than by just using the
browser's Back function.

Another thing that works particularly well on search sites (but won't
work on this site because the links seem to be mostly implemented
by Javascript functions)  is to open the link in a new tab or window,
e.g. hold down a Ctrl- key or a Shift- key when clicking on a link
when you know that you want to return to the launching page.
In that case you achieve the same effect of Back by closing
the tab or window.

Sorry for delay in reply, have been away.  The back buttons that are built
into the page do not necessarily take me back to my previous page.  They are
only there for purposes of "item review", meaning they just link between
items that have been on the air during an hour of programming and are just
there for purposes of reviewing only those items.  If I do a general search
or place items in shopping cart and want to go back to the previous page I
was on, to reorder same item in another color or to see item again, I receive
the "page expired message".  These pages do not have built in back arrows.  I
have to use IE back button.  The only pages that have the built in back
arrows are the 24-Hour Product Review pages.  This is starting to occur on
some others sites now, too!  Very annoying.

You mentioned before a browser cache of 1024 MB.  That's way too big.
Reduce it to no more than 100 MB.  I really only recommend 50 MB.

Sorry for delay in reply, I've been away.  I reduced my browser cache to 50
MB but haven't seen a change other than slowing down page loading a little.
Do I need to completely empty my cache before this solution may take effect?
Thanks.
