IE7 Del History Hangs

All of the sudden, when I delete my browsing history in IE7 it appears to
run, but never stops.  I cannot cancel, and must ctr/alt/del to get it to
stop.  The timing of this bug seems to coincide with my downloading of the
latest bunch of Microsoft updates on last Sunday - a modest 25 MB or so of
the latest patches.  It would appear that this download upset this function.
Any ideas?  Thanks.

Hi,
You may have a corrupted history folder.

Try deleting the History folder for the affected user account. A new one
will be create on restart.

The procedure [Windows XP]
Login as another user with administrator privileges, or from the machine's
default administrator account (startup in safe mode.) Make sure that you can
see hidden and system files (Folder Options> View) then delete the affected
History folder from Windows Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and
Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\History] Restart the computer.

Hope this helps,

I  am afraid that didn't do it; at least the creating a second user.  XP
won't let me delete the cache even as a different user, so I can't delete the
history folder either.  So the hung history problem remains.  I am afraid
that safe mode approach might be a little out of my rechnical depth, but I am
going to screw up my courage and try anyway.  I really wish the cache was not
locked by Microsoft, it is insulting.

Nevermind.  It's fixed.  I have no idea why, but I went back and tried the
second user aproach again, and this time it worked fine.

I spoke too soon.  Even though I eliminate the history, cooies,  IE temp
folders... the problem recurs the next time I try and use the delete all
history options.  I have verified this twice.

What next?

McMike:

This is the same problem that I am experiencing.  I was using IE7
before without the problem until I also loaded down the latest
updates, now I am trying to solve the exact same issue.  Any luck?

Partial success.  Using another account to wipe out the history works
initially.  After that, the delete history function works as advertised for a
while.  But the problem eventualy returns - but not immediately.  I suspect
that only some or one web site I visit is causing the problem.  I further
suspect that this web site is one that uses Microsoft .net passport id for
authentication.  I have not had a chance to test this theory.

I am having the same problem now and nothing seems to work.  I have
tried logging in from a different account and totally uninstalling IE7
and reinstalling but to no avail.  Has anyone come up with a fix for
this yet?

I am also experiencing the exact same problem. I have used an alternate Admin
account and deleted the history folder. Deleting the history folder sometimes
results in the "delete history" feature working properly for a brief period,
but the problem quickly returns. When the "delete history" function hangs up;
I can select "Cancel", and it responds by switching the status to
"Cancelling"; however, it remains in the "Cancelling" state indefinitely and
I need to end-task using ctrl-alt-del.

I believe that I first began experiencing this problem around mid April. It
appears that other people have had this problem since February 2007.

I'm having the same problem. Delet History box runs forever as does
canceling. Had no problem until a mother board problem required a complelte
hard drive rebuild. This thread petered out in May - any update, fixes?

Most likely cause is interference from third-party programs.
E.g.  McAfee  was once notorious for interfering with History.
However, since the registry needs updating by the operation too
it could be other so-called security programs interfering there too.

Try doing this during a safe mode boot.   E.g. that usually prevents
such extraneous programs from starting.   Unfortunately it may not
completely avoid the effects of their interference, e.g. in cases where
the protection is implemented by modification of permissions, etc.

You could try running  ProcMon  while the  Delete History  is running
to see if it gives you any clues about either failing registry or file accesses.

Good luck

Assuming that you are in Windows XP...

Log into an administrative account other than the one that has the issue
with deleting the history. Create a new account temporarily, if necessary.

Navigate to your history folder.

Change the view options so that you can view all system and hidden files.

Delete ALL the files.

Log out of this account and back into the one that wouldn't let you delete
the history.

Try using the delete history function.

I'm getting this too in Windows XP. It affects the following for me in any
mode:

Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Browsing History > Delete History
OR Delete All

IE7 > Tools > Internet Options > Delete Browsing History > Delete History OR
Delete All

Same when I use:

Internet Properties > Reset Internet Explorer settings

AND when I use Start > Properties > Customize > Advanced > Recent documents
Clear List function also hangs.

rundll32.exe is the process that hangs these apps. I kill the process to get
out but this is a permanent problem.

This can't be a 3rd party issue since this problem also coincided with my
Windows Update downloads.

Is there anybody at MS who knows anything about their software?

Interesting. The problem just went away after I installed Setpoint drivers
for my Logitech mouse. Do mouse drivers use rundll32.exe? Some light on this
is appreciated. I'm unsure if this fix is intermittent. I'll post if it comes
back.

Nope. The problem returned. Scratch that. Firefox anyone?

Solution achieved.

nVidia nTune utility caused rundll32.exe conflicts. After uninstall, all
features related to browsing history in explorer.exe service work normally.
This fix is consistent too. Cheers.

Hey I was having the same problem. What I discovered was some sort of problem
with Nero. I killed two processes in task manager related to Nero. The names
of the processes had "index" and "indexing" in them. After killing them, the
delete started working again. I uninstalled all the Nero applications,
rebooted and tested again. It is working great now. Good luck. This was tough
to track down for me. None of the other solutions worked. (i.e. second admin
account or problem with ntune.) I hope this helps someone else besides me.
