Saving Flash videos

Ron Hirsch - 28 Apr 2007 10:20 GMT I'm running IE7 in XP Pro with all updates et al.
When I'm on a site where a Flash video is available, it will play just fine. But unlike things like "mov" files, when I right click on the Flash video, I see no option to save the file to a folder on my machine.
I did a search in Google, and it came up with a variety of free plug-ins that can be installed in IE7, and presumably will allow such a save.
Does anyone have any recommendations on this matter, re what is a good choice here?

Ron Hirsch - 28 Apr 2007 13:23 GMT Thanks for your reply.
It just so happens that I had already downloaded that file, but not yet installed it.
I like to get "confirmation" from others that it is an appropriate install first.
Thanks again -

Ron Hirsch - 28 Apr 2007 16:18 GMT John,
In my many years of using computers, there have been quite a few times that I've installed some 3rd party shareware/freeware, and discovered the following
1. It also installed a bunch of undesired stuff
2. It had serious interactions/problems with my system
3. I didn't like it, and it didn't have an uninstall feature, or
4. It did have an uninstall feature, but left loads of junk in the Registry and other places
5. There is also the possiblity that 3rd party software could be tainted with who knows what
I have found that getting info (before I do the install) from others, who have used the freeware, can be a definite plus
Maybe I'm too carfeful, but better too careful, than sloppy.

Ron Hirsch - 28 Apr 2007 18:41 GMT I have lots of security software installed on my system, most of which runs constantly, and I run scans regularly using several spyware and other security software.
I installed FlashSavingPluginSetup.exe on my system. I do show the Flash Saving button on the extreme right of of IE7's window, and just above the web page itself's area.
But, I cannot manage to use it for anything. I tried clicking/double clicking/right clicking, bu nothing seems to happen. All I see is the usual list of items that I get when right clicking on the toolbars anywhere
I ran the SWF cache viewer via the new icon on my desktop, and that does open up an SWF cache viewer window, which has a long list of "stuff". But I can't get anything to actually play there. All I can see as I scroll down the list are static images of prior stuff.
I did manage to save a file "realted" to a flash movie I was watching to a custom folder location. But that file size is way too small, and the only thing that displays when I put the focus on that file, while in the SWF cache viewer window is 1 static screen.
I've read the readme file, and other "instructions" for supposedly saving and replaying Flash videos. But I can't see what I'm doing wrong.
I'm an advanced user, but I must be doing something wrong, as I've had no l luck with this situation.
If you can give me some tips on using this plug-in, I'd be very happy to try them out.

Ron Hirsch - 28 Apr 2007 19:14 GMT Onc correction to what I said. Various of the files in the cache do have some action in them, with various things moving around et al. So it does seem that the ability to play from the cache is there. But I've not been able to save and replay a flash movie from a site where I can access a wide range of such items. Nor do I see any of the lengthy flash movies that I watch, show up in thw cache for a replay later.
They play fine directly from the site, and I have not been able to save them, and replay them later. This is my primary problem.

Ron Hirsch - 28 Apr 2007 20:04 GMT Well, I'm making headway. I selected one the items in the cache, which is a short flash "advertising" movie. I saved it to another file name in a custom folder. I then went to that folder, and played it - all went well.
So, it seems that the "problem" I'm having now is that the Flash movies that I access on the Adobe site do not appear in the cache listing for me to save to a custom folder.
The Adobe page for this is
http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/
I then click on "Photoshop CS3" in the upper half of the window. This then gives me a list of various Flash movies in the lower part of the display. I select one, and double click on it, and the movie starts.
But that movie does not appear in the cache listing. Since it does not, that may be why I cannot save it to a custom folder. Is it possible that Adobe has somehow "locked" the movie to keep people from saving it????

Is it possible that Adobe > has somehow "locked" the movie to keep people from saving it???? Not exactly. The main.swf file is cached (e.g. as seen in the TIF viewer.) But when I drag it out of there to an IE window I get a message which shows that it needs to see something else (data/lang.xml) at the same time.
However, the whole page seems to be cached when the Bookmark video link is used and is usable in a Working Offline state then.
Hmm.. TIF viewer shows the main.swf file expires quickly. So, if you close IE and try to replay the file offline I suspect it could be deleted more quickly than you may like.
Ah. File, Save As... Web Page Complete also works. And the re-play of the same use of it which caused parts of it to be cached also works from %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\ Presumably it won't be subject to expiry then. TBD. ; )
Good luck

Ron Hirsch - 30 Apr 2007 10:34 GMT Hi Bob,
Did you see my other message below, re "streaming video does not get cached".?
I made contact with Adobe, and they advised me that the movies are streaming video, which does not use the cache.
I've been doing some searches in Google, and there are apparently lots of freeware/shareware programs out there, which can save streaming video of many types. I'm looking into this further.

The title of this thread is Saving Flash videos so I naturally assumed that that is what you were trying to save... ; }

This does not use the cache, and the video cannot be saved to one's hard drive..
There are a number of shareware type programs out there that I've spotted which can do the job, via different approaches.
This is one of them

Ron Hirsch - 29 Apr 2007 10:04 GMT I've discovered the reason for my inability to save the Adobe flash videos.
Adobe has advised me that they are streaming videos, and are not cached. So they apparently cannot be saved.
