I just installed IE7 from the M/S website and when I click on the IE desktop
icon the IE6 front page loads but says it is IE7 (help/about). When I click
on a link it locks up for about 30 sec. and the the IE7 front page loads and
all is OK. The IE desktop icon did dot change after the install. I think it
is still linked to the IE6 directory but I can't find a new version
IExplore.exe to link to.

What menu items do you see if you  right-click  that icon?
If there is a Properties item what are its tabs and contents?

Hint: there is a very simple explanation for your symptom
which your symptom description so far does not rule out.

What do you see if you  Run...  (e.g. press Win-R and enter:)

   iexplore.exe  -nohome  -extoff

Note:   to use what that usually shows you need to click on the Stop button
and then reply to the  No Add-ons  prompt.

When I right click on the desk top IE icon ther is a "Properties" item at the
bottom and it has 4 tabs"General-Shortcut-Compatabilty-Virus Property"the
Target is "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" ans the Start in
is  Unser shortcut %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%. If I type in the "Run" comand I get
IE7.
Another thing I noticed after my first post is that after IE7 opens I have
open Task Bar Tabs for both IE6 & IE7.

There are some odd things in that description, I think.
E.g.  instead of   Virus Property  I have a tab labeled  Security.
Does this perhaps mean that you had your  AV  app running
during the install phase of  IE7  and that it intercepted and inhibited
parts of the update?

Also, where did the  IE7  iexplore.exe  get installed?
AFAIK it should be in   %ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\
Is the drive pointed to by   %ProgramFiles%   not  C: ?

I'm not sure what all  Start In:  is used for.   If it is just for finding data files
(e.g. not executables) I suppose it won't matter where you point it.
FWIW  I don't have anything in that field.

Yes, because they are different programs.  ; )

Glad to see you finally managed to avoid your problem symptom.
I agree with PA Bear;  I'm not sure that you have had a clean install.

I fixed the problem.
I did a search for iexplore.exe and it found both the IE6 & IE7 .exe's so I
made a new desktop shortcut to the IE7 .exe file and all is working now.
Thans for the help.

You may have a horked install of IE7.  I suggest that you...

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

2. Uninstall all toolbars

3. Reinstall IE7 per http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install,
and using http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.
