Windows Update killed IE7! navcancl & ieframe.dll error

After installing the latest windows updates today, IE7 now dies when trying
to start,  giving a security warning about navcancl from ieframe.dll.

I've saw a couple of other posts suggest it's KB931768 that's causing the
problem.

Doing a system restore to before this update got things working for me. Any
idea as to what the problem is ?

Thanks,
Andy Mackie

Same here. I encountered the same problem here with my Vista Ultimate Edition.

Solutions:
1: run as administrator or
2:in IE options-> security->disable protection mode.

I have the same problem. The download is still ready for install again, but
you need to find out which update is causing the problem and remove it before
installing or you will have to restore again. I will try to figure this out
and when and if i find a solution, i will post it.

Temporary Solution...

1. Start IE7 using Start->Run iexplore.exe  -nohome  -extoff
2. Right click on the toolbar area and tick Menu Bar if its disabled
2. Tools->Options->Advanced->Security->Disable Phishing Filter

I tried with no luck a complete reinstall of IE7 followed by
reinstalling Microsoft Update 31768 but the update broke it again.

Nice one Microsoft. Breaking HTML CSS support in Outlook 2007 and now
breaking your own browser. What will you think of next?

See 'Known issues with this security update > Controls that prompt before
they are loaded' section of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931768

1. Try opening IE in No Add-ons mode & see if this behavior persists.  If it
doesn't, change your IE home page to "blank" then close IE7 and reopen
normally (i.e., with all Add-ons enabled) and see if the behavior returns.

2. If still no joy, reopen in No Add-ons mode, reset IE settings
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737), close IE, open normally and see if
the behavior still persists.

This is all related to a cross-site security vulnerability addressed by
MS07-027/KB931768: http://secunia.com/advisories/24535/

Also try this fix, courtesy of MVP Robert Aldwinckle:

Start > Run > Type or copy/paste the following into the box:

iexplore.exe  -nohome  -extoff

I don't think the problem is related to addons, the installation of
IE7, proxies, Host files or the particular website being visited. It
is 100% reproducible on some machines like mine by simply toggling the
Phishing Filter on and off. Many users here have both the update and
Phishing Filter turned on and do not see the problem.

I was having the same issue even with the home page set to about:blank
and all addons disabled using the "Internet Explorer (No Addons)"
shortcut from the System Tools under Accessories. When I used the
"iexplore.exe  -nohome  -extoff" extensions, IE7 would open but as
soon as I went anywhere, even www.google.com, I'd get the dreaded
Navcancl message. Disabling Phishing Filter rectified all issues.
However, I have many users here who do not have the problem with the
931768 update installed and Phishing Filter enabled.

Temporary Solution...

1. Start IE7 using Start->Run iexplore.exe  -nohome  -extoff
2. Right click on the toolbar area and tick Menu Bar if its disabled
2. Tools->Options->Advanced->Security->Disable Phishing Filter

I tried with no luck a complete reinstall of IE7 followed by
reinstalling Microsoft Update 91768 but the update broke it again.
There is heaps of stuff on this development machine so pinpointing the
exact cause will be difficult. Lots of people have the issue so I'm
sure Microsoft will work it out eventually. In the mean time, I can
live without Phishing protection.

I Uninstall IE7 and now is working!!!
rburtnick - 20 May 2007 17:13 GMT
Temporary Solution..

1. Start IE7 using Start->Run iexplore.exe -nohome -extof
2. Right click on the toolbar area and tick Menu Bar if its disable
2. Tools->Options->Advanced->Security->Disable Phishing Filte

Exactly! This did the job.

I was going to ask whether to say "yes" or "no" to the Navcancl prompt
I finally tried "yes" but it didn't make any difference in outcome (I
disappeared.) Well, no difference that I could see ... which is why
kept looking for that to be addressed ... never saw it discussed her
or elsewhere.

It really is amazing how often I get to spend weeks of my time just t
get things to work. (and I've been doing this stuff since CPM days)

Hi,
Has your Temporary Internet Files folder been moved?
- - -
Posted by Tony on May 11, 2007
If you use Vista and have a similar kinda issue of latest KB931768, which
cause IE7 stopped working with a popping up window, indicating some navcancl
& ieframe.dll related issue, you may follow my instruction to fix that. IMO,
this issue is caused by a non-default temporary internet files' folder.

0. Check my previous thread to see if you have the same issue as I had.
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.mspx?dg=mi
crosoft.public.internetexplorer.general&tid=65a522c2-e440-42b9-9b07-a6267bd6945d

1.Maybe you need to change the folder options in control panel -> folder
options and turn off those hiding system & hidden files related settings.

2. Access control panel -> internet options -> general->history section->
settings, to see if your Temporary Internet Files folder is in its default
folder. The default folder should be like :
C:\Users\%USER_NAME%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files (default folder may vary in WindowsXP)

3. If it is not in a default folder format, change it to
C:\Users\%YOUR_USER_NAME%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\. IE7 will
automatically copy the temp files to
C:\Users\%YOUR_USER_NAME%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files by restarting windows.

4. Reapply the KB931768 patch ,if you have uninstalled it and turn on your
phishing filer. Restart IE7 to see if it works.

Hope this helps,

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I have checked the TIF and it is in the
correct place. I have however taken the extreme step of completely
re-installing Vista as the machine was only taken out of the box today
I have lost nothing(except if you count the hours I've wasted on it
during today). Reinstalling Vista has solved the problem so far. I have
been able to install Norton internet security and open IE without fault
and the machine just "feels" better now.if you follow what i mean? When
i first switched on the machine out of the box several errors
occurred,can;t remember what they were now but I do wonder if they were
the start of my previous problems.BUT as it stands right now I have not
re-Activated Phishing filter nor have I re-installed any Windoze
updates yet and feel a little aprehensive in doing so.
Maybe i should consider NOT installing the KB931768 patch. This is a
very strange situation indeed as i have a Dell desktop PC running
VistaHP which was purchased earlier this year and that has the KB931768
patch installed and runs absolutely fine.(fingers crossed). I also very
surprised that MS have not yet issued a fix for this problem.

Hi,
The issue with KB931768 only affected users who had moved the Temporary
Internet Files folder, IIRC.

You might try installing updates in chronological order- 5 or 6 at a time
and critical updates only (this round) with a restart after 5 or 6.

There will also probably be unnecessary programs installed by the
manufacturer, loading at startup, which could be disabled.

Follow-up: Right-click the Cancelled message > Select Properties > Write
down exactly what's shown in Address (URL) line and post it in a reply to
this thread.

Also see if disabling Phishing Filter makes any difference (Tools > Internet
Options > Advanced > Security).

I had the same problem. A fix I found really worked: change th
permissions for the temporary IE files
I found the fix in the known problems section from here: 'MS07-027
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931768

I allowed full control for the temp ie files folder for all th
subdirectories for the current user (I also had to use the Advance
options to check "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" first
and then it works without disabling the phishing filter...

I recently ran into this problem as well with one of our employees a
work.  I was able to find a solution but I'm not sure if it was th
best and only solution to the problem.  This problem was only affectin
this one person's ability to browse the internet (via IE7 on WinXP Pro
when he logs on to any machine on the network.  Kept receiving th
security warning popup window dealing with a file called navcanl fro
ieframe.dll. Other users were able to log on this machine and brows
the internet just fine.  No matter what machine he logged onto he woul
receive this error so I'm thinking the problem was tied to use
privileges.  I think this problem started after a Windows Update jus
like others have noted

First, I disable all of his addons (he had about 10 - 12 of them on hi
profile...others had about 8 or 9).  I restarted IE7 but that didn'
seem to make much of a difference because it still had the problem.
went to user accounts and noticed that his user name, domain, and grou
and  was somehow missing from the list when I know for a fact that hi
account used to be listed there along with the other accounts.
didn't think much of it but I went back and added his account again a
well as give him power user privileges and then logged him off.  Afte
logging him back on he was now able to browse the web again withou
getting the navcanl/ieframe.dll error message.  I went to the othe
computer that he was having problems with and re-added his accoun
there as well and then logged off and back on again and the problem wa
fixed there as well.  I don't think the problem was with his IE7 add-on
because I re-enabled them prior to adding user privileges.

Hopefully this info helps others as well

Fix for res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.html# is related to
MS Update KB942615. Turns on Microsoft Firewall and
I already had Trend Micro firewall on. Turned of one
firewall and then got stuck in loop of being redirected
to "RunOnce Microsoft web site every time I first ran
IE7. The RunOnce page had error so it never completedit registry
changes. I had to make them as follows:

in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main - add
entries:

"RunOnceComplete"  = dword:00000001
"RunOnceHasShown" = dword:00000001

You are then redirected to yet another Microsoft
web site to take a Tour of the new features of IE7.
Additional changes to your registry will be made my this web site when
you finish the tour. I made the mistake of not allowing these changes
when Spybot warned me and had to take the Tour again. Thank You
Microsoft for the tour from res://frame.dll/serror.html# to RunOnce
Hell and back again!
