On a regular basis, I delete my Browser History.  Recently, when I tried to
do this, a small window pops up like it is transfering files.  It says,
"Please wait while the browsing history is delelted.  Deleting history...".
The problem is this, it just keeps RUNNING!!!  It never stops or deletes my
browser history!  I left it running all day today while I was at work only to
come back and see it still running.  Also, I can't close it out.  When I do,
it says that it is "cancelling", but it still keeps on running.  I end up
having to use CTRL+ALT+DELTETE to finally stop it.  When I do that, a window
pops up saying that the program is not responding.  What happened???  This is
really getting on my nerves.  Please help me!

Hi,
Another program may be interfering- security, privacy, mail, messaging, etc.
Try clearing the History from Safe Mode.

Safe Mode- XP

Safe Mode- Vista

If you *always* have to use Safe Mode, try shutting down other programs
until you find the guilty program.

You may have a corrupted History folder. If the previous steps don't help,
post back.

Hope this helps,

Don,

Thank you for responding.  In SAFE MODE, I was able to delete the HISTORY.
I tried to shut down programs like you told me too, but I still have the same
problem.  Any other ideas?

Thanks!
:-)

Hi,
Since Safe Mode worked, you probably don't have a corrupted History folder.

Next time you have the problem, try clearing the History from Control Panel>
Internet Options (with no IE windows open.)

The fact that History could be cleared from Safe Mode indicates that a
program that didn't load in Safe Mode was the culprit. Experimentation,
selectively disabling programs, is the only way to identify that program.

Okay, maybe I am doing this wrong.  Exactly how do I shut down programs?  I
have been shutting down the ones that are in the taskbar in the lower right
hand corner.

Thanks again

Hi,
Closing programs from the icon in the systray/notification area should work.
You might also check taskmanager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) to make sure that the
programs are really terminated.

A better method of troubleshooting this might be to uncheck a program or two
from Start> Run> msconfig> Startup tab. Restart, then see if the problem
persists. But, you may not want to give up a useful/valuable security
program because it locks the IE History, unless a replacement program is
available.
