internet explorer 7 stopped working after updates

i downloaded the updates last week for windows, it said i had one update left
but i had to restart first for the updates i had downloaded and installed,
upon restarting and booting internet explorer again, it says i may not be
connected to the internet, but i am and i diagnosed my connections and they
were fine. i cannot get internet explorer to work now, and i fear i may not
be current on automatic updates cause internet explorer is not working. i am
going through firefox now, cause it is my back up browser, i downloaded it
after a system restore to a point before i did the updates, and explorer
worked until the automatic updates kicked in and restarted the comp, upon
booting, explorer stopped working again, and again. i cleaned my cache, no
luck, ran no add ons explorer... same problem, please help me make explorer
work again. Windows XP SP2 is what my system is.

i tried to download and install IE7 again, after re-installing the net worked
fine in it, until i did windows update, upon updating and restarting, same
problem with IE. says: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

What you can try:

i know the net works, i'm going through firefox right now, but i can not
download the updates cause IE isn't going to any webpages, please help
someone!

That doesn't prove that iexplore.exe will work with your network configuration.
E.g. if you have a third-party firewall which blocks outbound access
and it has noticed that iexplore.exe has changed it could be waiting for you
to approve the change before it will allow the new iexplore.exe to send requests
to the Internet. (Etc.)

If you have such a setup try removing or at least disabling the interfering
software. (FYI sometimes the former is required as some such products'
facilities for disabling them do not work properly.)
Before connecting to the Internet make sure then
that you are using the Windows firewall instead
