Census files saved to Temporary Internet Files Folder

I am a genealogy fan and have previously saved census files from
Ancestry.com.

However, I recently purchased a Vista machine and found that I can no longer
do this.  Basically what happens is that I click the Save button and get a
Save as dialogue box which allows me to name the file and specify a location.
But when I click the Save button, I get a message box stating: "For your
computer's security, this file was saved to the Temporary Internet Files
Folder."

The message box then asks the question if I want to open the folder, and if
I say yes, it allows me to path to the Temporary Internet Files Folder per
Tools/Internet Options (but the folder not visible when I get there).  I am
fine with saving the file to a "safe" location, but I would like to be able
to find the file to move it to a location of my choice.  How can I access the
file in the TIFF?

Alternately, how do I get Vista to allow me to save the file to a location
of my choice?  My wife has an XP machine with IE7 and has no problems with
this.

Your problem has a lot to do with with the new security features associated
with Vista,
Unfortunately I have no answer to your query.
I am not anti IE7, but I too use Ancestry, and have used Firefox Browser
for a few years with little or no problems, it works great with Vista. I
still use IE7 but when necessary.

For Vista problems, post to the Vista NGs such as
microsoft.public.windows.vista.(security/general).

Sorry Allen,  but I did a search of "save to Temporary Internet Files Folder"
and arrived at this location.  I saw questions which appeared to be similar
to mine and decided to ask mine.  To be honest, I do not know how to navigate
to the location you suggested.  Also, I am actually not sure my problem is a
Vista problem anyway.  Merely because the problem is occurring on a Vista
machine does not necessarily mean that Vista is the cause.  Whatever the
cause, the problem is that the files are being saved to a location of which I
apparently have no access.  My question is: is there something I can do to
override this behavior either in IE or Vista or is there a method of
accessing files in the TIFF (make them visible for copying)?

It is definitely a Vista problem since as you state your wife has XP and no
such problem; neither does any one else who is using XP. You can set up
Outlook Express as a newsgroup reader/writer. The server to access is
msnews.microsoft.com . After setting up your newsreader you can access not
only the two groups pertaining to Vista but this one as well. I cannot
answer your question regarding how to access TIF on Vista since I am using
Windows XP. I just don't know anything about Vista.

This newsgroup is for IE (any version) on any Windows version.

Thanks for reminding me of that and also that there is no OE in Vista (which
I should have remembered before I posted my reply). I did not realize that
there are slight differences between the Windows Vista version of IE7 and
the Windows XP version. If someone inquires about IE7 on Vista in the future
I will refrain from replying.

Open Windows Explorer.
Press Alt-T | Folder Options | View
Choose Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck Hide protected system files.
Close and reopen Windows Explorer and then try.

Thank you very much, Mr. Saunders, for your helpful response.

Your suggestion did not work because the system threw us a curve.  Even
after changing the setting in the view tab of the Folder Options dialogue box
as you suggested, the file I saved still was not visible.  However, trying
your suggestion got me messing around again and I now have a solution.

The solution is as follows:

When I click the "Save" icon to save a census jpeg file from Ancestry.com, I
get a "Save as..." dialogue which allows me to give the file a name.  I then
click "Save" and get the infamous message box advisory to the effect that:
“For your computer’s security the file was saved to the Temporary Internet
Files Folder…Do you want to open this folder?”

If I click “Yes” Vista opens a folder named "C" inside a "Virtualized"
folder inside the TIFF.  From this virtualized "C" folder, I can path to the
virtualized folder into which I saved the file.

This "Virtualized" folder is not visible when I open the TIFF even after
unhiding the hidden system folders.  However, I have found that if I save a
shortcut to the virtualized file location to my desktop, I have ready access
to the saved files.

Now when I save a census file to my computer, I say “no” when it asks if I
want to open the folder.  Instead I open the shortcut to the virtualized file
location to gain access to the file.

Not great solution, but uncheck protected mode on the security tab in
Tools.
