After installing updates for IE7 this week, the browser will load to a
webpage, but the display remains blank. Don't have the update names right
now, but I'm pretty sure this has happened to someone else. Any help for me
out there?

Hello,
what do you see when the page is loaded? Its title?
If you try starting IE without add-ons, what will it do (Start -> Run ->
iexplore -extoff)?

Greetings,
P. Di Stolfo

After 5 months of no problems, IE7 on Vista Ultimate now hangs
when launched after auto updates installed two days ago. It appears to
connect to any page - as the bottom status bar flys by: "redirecting to site
x"; "website found x"; "start downloading x") but doesn't complete the
process (bottom middle bar never gets filled green).
It hangs with an empty white "page box" and the menus don't work.  Waiting
hours doesn't matter.

If I right-click IE7 icon, "Run as Administrator", everything works fine
even tho I have admin privelege. From this successful launch, turning off
add-ins, "delete browsing history" restore defaults doesn't help. And, other
User logins have no problems.

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. Incompatible add-ons:  What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop
and choose Start Without Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

3. Malware already installed on the computer:  Help with malware

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author.  See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything.  Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along.  Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Frank:
1. To write this, I launched IE7 rt-click-"Run as administrator".  If I
launch IE7 with out add-ons (Start/All Programs/Accessories/System
Tools/Internet Eplorer (no add-ons), it hangs as I described above.  Again,
this IE7 hanging is only on my login.  Other users on same box have no
problems.

2. I have reset IE to defaults, several times.  All zones set to defaults.
No exclusions.

3. Malware? This sudden IE7 hanging came out of the blue-no software was
installed with my knowlege before this occured.  The only thing I am aware of
is Microsofts's auto-updates happened just before the hanging.  Windows
Defender was/is running, Windows Firewall was/is running.  Norton AV 2007 was
uninstalled long ago as it corrupts local networking by not coexisting with
Windows Vista contrary to what they say.  And if malware, wouldn't all users
be affected?

The frustrating part of all of this is the Vista Ultimate software is too
un-user friendly, with too many places and ways into doing the same thing.
Say-it/do-it in only one place.  For 5 months I have been trying to give
Vista Ultimate a fair evaluation, but at this point I'm nearly ready to bail
out as I have spent more time fixing/reconfiguring it than using it. I bet
there is NOONE who really does keep the same window properties! (Tools/Folder
Options/View/Apply to All Folders).  It appears to have been written without
much discipline or project management.  Adding lots of cutsy screens, menu
rewrites and multiple menus doing the same thing interfere with one's core
understanding and does not make great software.

Thanks for listening and your suggestions,

Pat

A sign of malware.

With your knowledge.

Windows Defender isn't all that good.

Except during the first couple weeks, I only have to okay something maybe
once a week.
