I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate. Most things work fine, but I can't
download from some sites. For example, I need to upgrade Famil Tree Maker for
Vista.
If I follow the link from Vista Problem Reports and Solutions, I'm directed
to the Family Tree Maker update for Windows Vista page. I click on the link
to the Vista Compatibility update, and a dialogue box opens for me to Run or
Save FTMVistaUpdater.msi.
If I save it, it apparently downloads the 1.30 Mb update OK, but the
dialogue box just disappears after it gets to 100%, and the file is not
saved. If I run it, the update downloads, and then I get a security dialogue
asking if I want to run. When I click OK, the dialogue box disappears, but
nothing happens.
I've tried switching-off the Firewall & Internet Security - but it doesn't
seem to make any difference. Help!

When you launch IE, right click on IE desktop icon and select Run As
Administrator. Does it still happen?
If so, right click on IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons.
Does it still happen?

Hi.
Thanks for your reply.
It made no difference running as administrator. (My account has
administrator privileges anyway?)
I didn't have an option to disable add-ons when right-clicking on IE, but
disabled them all through the tools menu. This still made no difference.
Best regards,
Richard

Have you tried opening Family Treemaker and using the Update option contained
within the application?

Yes - same result.
Incidentally, the same happens when trying to download the Fingerprint
reader software for Vista from the Microsoft site.

Were you able to download prior to this occurring? If so, try a browser
reset: Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>Reset Button
If using Norton, disable the download manager. It will conflict with IE.

Yes - I could download without problems under XP.
I tried resetting the browser, reloaded and tried again - same result.
I'm using Norton Internet Security. There's no reference to Download
Manager, but I opened the Protection Centre and turned everything off - i.e.
Auto-Protect, Personal Firewall, Intrusion Prevention, Spyware Protection,
Phishing Protection - but still the same problem.

Richard

If the Office Source Engine Service is
disabled, you will not be able to install these updates. Here are two methods
for handling the issue.
1. Open Office Help and search for "office source engine"
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\SETUP.CHM
Set the Startup Type to "Manual"
If you disable the Ose.exe file, Microsoft Office updates do not install
when you use Microsoft Windows Server Update Services or the Microsoft Update
Web site to deploy software updates and hotfixes to computers in the
organization

You cannot install an Office 2003 service pack

Check in these folders for possible downloaded files - J. Brush
C:\Users\$user$\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Low
C:\Users\$user$\appdata\Local\VirtualStore
Where $user$ is your username.
And lastly, perform a system restore prior to the download issue.

I still can't fathom this. For instance, cannot install the PDF add-in for
Word 2007. Each time the download dialogue box completes, but then disappears
without trace. Music etc downloads OK, however.
I just tried logging an incident (under Vista 32 bit operating system) with
Microsoft Customer Support, but now it's telling me my Product ID is wrong.
However, I'm sure I transcribed this from the System Control Panle correctly
(and my system is definitely registered and activated)!
I don't know; perhaps I'm just tired. Goodnight!
