IE7.0.6000; Office 2003

I normally use Tabs to open multiple sites. However, there are occasions
when I have more than one IE7 Windows open. Very often, if I close one
window, they all go white/translucent and I get the error message that IE has
stopped working.

What do I need to change to get it to leave open the Windows I don't want
shut?

Try using IE without add-ons.  Windows logo key + R > iexplore.exe –extoff
Does it still persist?
