When I try to select multiple items in an IE7 window (instructions on the web
page say "hold ctrl key to select multiple items"), instead of selecting more
than one item, a new browser window opens.  How do I fix this?

Does this relate to a URL on the web? If so can you provide it?

If you accidently CTRL+click a URL, it opens the link in a new tab/window. If you're CTRL+clicking multiple items in a dropdown box that happens to hover over a URL, IE will sometimes click the URL anyway. If this is the case, try repositioning the page so the dropdown moves in the opposite direction. Ex, if the dropdown is near the bottom of the window, it will open upwards instead of downwards.

Thanks, but I'm not clicking a URL.  For example, if you go to the following
website:

http://www.texasgasprices.com/

and do a search for gas prices (left side of the page, about half way down),
when I try to select more than one area using the ctrl key as stated, a new
browser window opens instead of selecting more than one item.  Any ideas?

I can multiple select here just fine. No new windows for me. What exactly opens in the new window?

I can't replicate the problem either. Suggest that you try from another
browser, eg Firefox (free) - it's a good idea to have a second browser
anyway just in case one goes bang and you can't get online help, or download
easily...

I don't have a problem with it.
What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Start Without
Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

Disable some nVidia utiltity.   Please do a search with that as a keyword.

Thanks!  That worked.  I disabled the nVidia desktop manager, and that solved
the problem.  don't know anything about nVidia anyway....

This one drove me nuts until I found a fix on the internet. I was
ready to go back to IE6 because I did not want to disable the nVidia
desktop manager.  An option to disabling the nVidia desktop altogether
is to change one setting in nVidia properties:
1, Right click on desktop
2. Select nView Properties
3. Select Applications tab
4. Left click on Applications Extensions button (for my version of
nVidia)
5. Uncheck/disable the option for "Add internet Explorer double-right
and shift-left click extension (Opens links in a new window on the
display of your choice.)".

Rather than a button for "Application Extensions" yours might say
"Enhancements."
