IE7 shuts down when I try to view particular blog entries

OK here goes.  I've tried to fix this myself but no joy.

I'm running IE7 on Windows XP Media Center Edition with all the updates etc.
in place.  When I try to look at my blog entries IE7 just shuts down.  It
doesn't happen for all entries, just some.  When it happens for one it always
happens for that one.

IE7 on "Add/Remove Programs" doresn't have an uninstall option.

Offending entries are OK on IE6 machine.  Problem persists even when running
without add-ons.

For an example, try the first blog entry at http:\\diandowen.livejournal.com
and click on the comments link for the first blog entry (currently sitting at
21 comments.)

If I can provide any other info to help answer this, please ask. Thanks for
whatever help you can give.

Do you experience the same problem when you run IE 7 with no add-ons?

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer
(No Add-ons)

I think I said in my original post that the problem persists even when I run
without add-ons.  If I didn't, I meant to.

The next step in the troubleshooting regimen is to reset Internet
Explorer to it's default settings:
Tools > Internet Explorer > Advanced tab > Reset Internet Explorer settings

Here are the remaining steps:
* Check for conflicts with existing software, particularly security software
* Scan for and remove malware
* Remove and re-install Internet Explorer following published directions

I can't RIES as it tells me that all windows and programs need to be shut
down, even though I've got nothing else running except IE7.

As far as removing and reinstalling IE7 under published directions is
concerned, none of the published directions works for me as a) IE7 does not
have a remove option on Add/Remove Programs and b) there is no spuninst.exe
file in the referenced folder.

Thanks

You said in your first post that it doesn't shut down immediately for all
sites, so I can't see why you can't run RIES.

Also, you can run RIES from the Internet Options in the Control Panel.

Cannot reproduce.

1. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

2. If you uninstall (a) "Windows Internet Explorer 7" via Add/Remove
Programs (which automatically returns you to IE6), as well as (b) all
toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window Blinds)
and don't reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist?

1.  Unable to RIES because it insists I close all windows and programs even
though I'm not running any.

2.  unable to uninstall IE7 because Add/Remove Programs entry doesn't have
that option and relevant folder in Windows does not contain spuninst.exe file.

Thanks.

Do you use "Registry cleaners" or have you run Windows Live Safety Center's
Clean-up Scan?  [Just a question, NOT a recommendation to do so.]

Sounds like your install of IE7 is horked.  A format & reinstall is the only
way to get things straightened out.  A Repair Install will *not* help.

Did  IE7  come preinstalled on that machine?

So just to be clear we click on the count to go here?:

What happens if you disable scripting?   You probably could even use the
IE Dev Toolbar  to  Disable:  Scripting  more conveniently than changing
security settings.   If that helps you might also get a clue by trying a script
debugger but  the  livejournal.com  scripts aren't making that easy...  ; ]

Good luck

Yes, that's the link.  Incidentally, I tried it from your message and it
still shuts down.  I'm sorry.  I don't know how to disable scripting.  I
don't see an IE Dev toolbar anywhere.

Thanks

Well one way is to set your security zone level to  High.
E.g. doubleclick on the security zone icon in the Status bar
and use  Default Level (to see the level slider), then drag the slider up.
(Or press  Alt-D,Alt-L,CursorUp,etc.)

> I don't see an IE Dev toolbar anywhere.

It's an add-on available from  MSDN  downloads.

BTW  if you have been trying to use  RIES  from an  IE  window
be aware that you can use the equivalent  Internet Properties  dialog
either from the  Control Panel  for its  Internet Options  applet
or by Run...  (e.g. press Win-R and enter:)

   control  inetcpl.cpl,,6

(the ,,6  puts you right in the Advanced tab where the RIES button is.)

Note that the  KB923737  article actually mentions this option:

<quote>
Note If you cannot start Internet Explorer 7 for some reason,
use RIES from Internet Options in Control Panel.
</quote>

However, if your problem has to do with scripting or XML I'm not sure
that  RIES  will be enough.

Good luck

Robert
