Opening shortcuts results in failure to load web pages

When I try to open internet shortcuts in IE7 I get the "Internet Explorer
cannot display the webpage" error message and am unable to load any web
pages.  If I close IE7 and try to open the address manually it works, as do
subsequent internet shortcuts.

Can anyone help?

Hi,
Make sure that IE is the default browser.

Windows XP...Control Panel> Add or remove programs> Set program access and
defaults.
Vista... Control Panel> Default programs> Set your default programs.

Less likely, but you may have an incompatible browser add-on.
See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp
for troubleshooting information.

Hope this helps,
Don

Don,
I've only got one browser installed so it's not a problem with the
default browser setting.  IE7, as an application, opens when I run Internet
Shortcuts, it's just that pages themselves don't load.

I disabled all the add-ons but that didn't appear to resolve anything
either unfortunately.  The strange thing is that Internet Shortcuts do work
if I open IE7 on its own first then open a shortcut from the desktop - it's
very strange!

Thanks again for your suggestions,
 Andy

Windows XP
Dell Latitude D610 Laptop
Only IE7 installed
Company domain - no group policy settings have changed
Sophos Anti-Virus and Firewall

I've previously been running IE7 for some time without this problem so would
love to know what's caused it!

Try this from http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902932

1. Click Start, click Run, type  regsvr32 urlmon.dll  in the Open box, and
then click OK.
2. Click OK when you receive the following message:
DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded

Next check the file associations for  URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
See: "If nothing happens when you click a link:"
at http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm
It's possible, with IE7, that "Application used to perform this action"
should read:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome %1
