hi,
my problem is when i try to install IE7 i get that message in the
installation window that says
"Internet Explorer 7 could not be installed. You must restart your system to
confirm that any changes to your system are undone.
After you restart, follow the "Internet Explorer Troubleshooting" shortcut
on your desktop to get more information."

The desktop shortcut leads to Microsoft Knowledge Base article 917925. This
doesn't help as the solutions either dont work or dont apply (cant find any
of the suggested errors in the log files). I've tried it in Safe Mode with
Networking (that doesnt work either).
I dont think the Installation file is corrupted because the installation has
been successful before. That was before i did a HP System Recovery.

I am running Windows XP SP2 and have not uninstalled IE6.

Can anyone help me pleeease?
Thankx

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER!

[And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx as the installation source,
not Automatic/Windows Update.]

Thanx those links were a gr8 read but none of the info has helped.

i hav just noticed that in the 'ie7_main.log' file there is an error that says
"Couldn't initialize the Windows Update Manager, HRESULT:0x80040154"
then every section after that ends with
">>Result: SKIPPING This Phase" .

the 'ie7.log' file says it hasnt been modified since march 2007 which is
strange cos ive attempted several installations since then.

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup.  Thank you.

Can you successfully reach http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com, scan for and
install updates?  Is the machine (now) fully patched at Windows Update?

NB: Do NOT attempt to install IE7 via Windows Update!
