IE7 and video problem

Connie Martin - 04 Jul 2007 19:24 GMT I have read a lot of the streams on this problem but have found no resolution. In cnn.com I am able to view live videos, but not older ones. When I click on them, it opens in a new tab but where the video should be is just black. There are headings to various things you can select around the black video spot, but everything is blank. I am also unable to view videos in discoverychannel.ca. Does anyone know how to resolve this? I have posted a question to CNN but they have not responded so far. Connie
PA Bear - 04 Jul 2007 20:35 GMT Windows version?

To start IE7 in No Add-ons mode:
Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or
Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No add-ons).

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b) all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window Blinds) and don't reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist?

I have >>> posted a question to CNN but they have not responded so far. Connie Connie Martin - 05 Jul 2007 21:54 GMT The problem persists with 1 and 2 below. As for 3, I did not go through with the uninstall because it gave me a whole list of stuff that has been installed since I upgraded to IE7 and said that some of these programs may not work if IE7 is uninstalled. So, I backed out, and used Norton Go-Back to undo what I did in option 2 below.
I should never have upgraded to IE7. Our IT manager at work said "Never upgrade to the newer version of a software as soon as it comes out. Wait until they get the bugs out of it first." I should've listened. I can't believe that there is no fix to this video problem in IE7 version. Seems a lot of people are having the same problem. Microsoft needs to get a "once-for-all" fix out there for us. This is ridiculous!
Thank you very much for trying to help. I will check back here again to see if you have any other ideas. I'm not too keen on uninstalling IE7 due to possibly having to reinstall some other software, like my scanner and all the software that went with it, as well as many other things.
Thanks again. Connie Martin

Uninstalling IE7 is an important troubleshooting step: If the problem persists in IE6, we'll have a better idea of what's causing the problem.

Connie Connie Martin - 06 Jul 2007 00:28 GMT Okay....before I uninstall IE7, however, I should mention that there was a slight difference when I followed step 1 below. Forgot to mention it. This time I got a message the CNN uses Adobe Flasher Player and it detected that I didn't have it, which I do, so why it was saying I didn't, I don't know. The version I have is 9. Anyway, I clicked on install. That would only take me so far and I wasn't getting pop-ups to complete the installation so I went to my other session of IE with add-ons, and did the installation there. I closed all sessions then of IE and re-opened without add-ons and it was still telling me to install Adobe Flash Player. Although this player is in control panel under 'add/remove programs', I can't seem to find it. It's not in Program Files, and infact when I search drive C for "flash player", the only thing that shows there is "INSTALL_FLASH_PLAYER_ACTIVE_X-00E58D29.pf" and it's in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch".
I will wait for your comments on the above before I uninstall IE7.

If it does or doesn't, please reply to this thread and tell me what you found.
I very strongly recommend that you do NOT reinstall IE7 until you get this problem resolved.
You should be aware that there are quite a number of "MSN viruses" around right now that can cause this behavior, but at this point saying that it's the cause of your problem would be pure speculation on my part and I'd rather not send you off on a wild goose chase. <w>

The same problem exists. I am able to view Live video on CNN but not any other video....only the Live streams. Same problem exists with discoverchannel.ca. When I click on something to look at the video, a new screen opens and it's just a blue and black background, much like a PPT presentation screen, with the word "undefined" written about 4 times in various places. We have very good virus protection, which is kept up to date, and also a firewall. Connie

I downloaded an update sometime ago as I could not find 2007 versions. Anti-virus definitions are updated on a regular basis. Connie

It is clean. We are still unable to view CNN's on-demand videos. We can only view live videos. Connie

What I did is this: I went to Control Panel and removed Adobe Flash Player and re-installed it. For some reason, it is not showing in Control Panel but on-demand video is working now. I can't figure this one out but I don't think I'm going to bother. It's working. At least, it working today. Maybe tomorrow it won't. Seems that's the way computer go nowadays! Connie

I suspect Norton Anti-Virus or Firewall to have caused the problem.
Tip: Do not install any Norton 360 Add-ons!

Firewalls of any sort cause problems and I find Norton is less annoying. I had been able to view on-demand videos all along for as long as I can remember and then around the first of July it changed.
So, I don't suppose there would be any problem re-installing IE7? I like the tabbed sessions/screens, and had got used to where everything was. I didn't have any problem with it. I blamed it, of course, for this recent video problem because seems so many people are having problems with it.

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:
Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER! http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install
[And I strongly recommend using http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx as the installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.]

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to disable Norton 360. This is new to me. Hopefully IE7 installation will disable it. I don't know what else to do. I've searched everywhere and cannot figure out how to disable it. Connie

All is working fine, including both on-demand and live videos. Connie
