Address Line Autocomplete IE7 Problem

The autcomplete for URLs in the address line seems to dump whenever I restart
my computer.  On first starting there appears to be nothing in autocomplete,
i.e. typing "goo" will not bring up "google.com".  After I go to google.com
once it will bring this up as an autocomplete option. When I shut down and
restart my computer however, I'm back to nothing.  It appears that the
index.dat file is being purged on shut down or on restart.
Any suggestions on why this would happen and how to fix it?
Running Windows XP Pro, SP2 and IE7 with all available updates installed for
both.
Thanks,
Jeff

It might be a security program blocking the Registry change it needs to
make.  A few of the programs now doing this are:
Ad-aware's Ad-Watch
Fsecure
McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware
Norton AV
Spyware Blaster
Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks
Spybot- Teatimer
Spysweeper
Windows Defender
Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions.

In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 it actually has to be uninstalled.  Make sure
the Windows Firewall is turned on until you reinstall Zone Alarm.

Boot into Safe Mode and try the change.

Hmm, I do have Ad-watch on my computer though it is not set to run
automatically.  Still I will try removing it and see if that makes a
difference and let you knw.  Appreciate the input.

Okay, removed Ad-Aware and anything associated with it (even went through the
registry) but it didn't help.  Still will not keep the URL information after
I restart the computer.

=> What anti-virus application is installed?

=> What other anti-spyware applications might be installed?

=> Are you running a third-party firewall (e.g., ZoneAlarm; Comodo; Norton)
or are you using the Windows Firewall?

=> Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode?

To start IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:

=> Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?

=> If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b)
all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds) and don't reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist?

PA Bear,
- I have been running ETrust antivirus and firewall but I also uninstalled
and had no success getting the autofill to stay.
- No other anti-spyware, anti-adware, anti-anything running or installed at
this time.
- Firewall as noted above.
- Looked to try and start with no add-ons but I don't see that when I right
click on the icon.  However, the only thing I have done with IE7 is to
download and install it and run the updates.

Please make certain an anti-virus application is installed and fully updated
and that a firewall is enabled before taking the machine online!

If you right-click on the IE7 icon on your desktop and don't see a "Start
without add-ons" option, you most likely have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed)
install of IE7.  I suggest that you..,

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) *exactly* per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

2. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

3a. If the behavior persists, do NOT reinstall IE7 and reply to this thread.

3b. If the behavior does not persist, reinstall IE7 *exactly* per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install, and using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the installation
source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Hi,

In addition to Frank's comments, if you have a third party cleaner
application such as "CCleaner" set to run at startup/shutdown, this could be
an area to examine.

Good luck,

Thanks for the input.  I don't have CCleaner on my system but I will take a
look at my services and start-ups to see if there is anything there that
might be in this vein.

Reviewed all of my services, etc. but nothing there I can see that would be
affecting this.  Since this is a new computer and I don't have a lot
installed this actually took a lot less time than I am used to. :-)
In any case, IE7 still won't keep the URLs.
