I am unable to connect to the Internet from Internet Explorer 7.  I’m running
Windows XT and my ISP is Comcast.

This problem all started a few days ago when I replaced my cable modem with
a different brand.  After the installation was complete, I noticed that the
Weatherbug in my system tray was not displaying the temperature.  Further
investigation showed that the Weatherbug app, my IM’s, and even Internet
Explorer could not access the internet.  These are all IE add-ons, so if IE
can’t contact the internet, neither can they.

However, my web browsers (Seamonkey and Firefox) can access the net and they
work just fine.  Also so can Outlook Express.

Things I’ve done so far:

- Removed and reinstalled my Norton Antivirus.  Tried to contact the
interent from IE with Norton removed and the Windows firewall disable.  Could
not do so.
- Ran the Network Diagnostics for Windows XP which came back with Error 12029.
- Started up the computer in safe mode.  No change in symptoms.
- Opened IE7 with no add-ons.  Again, I see no change in the symptoms.

I though about reinstalling IE7, but in order to do that I have to run a
program called GenuineCheck.exe to assure that I indeed have genuine
Microsoft software.  The GenuineCheck.exe returned an error message stating,
“Code not available.  The validation code could not be obtained. “I’m
guessing this could be due to the fact that IE can’t contact the internet.

Hopefully someone can help me here.

I found the problem, thanks to the Network Diagnostics tool in Windows.  It
told me that it could not successfully ping my Internet Explorer Proxy
Server.  I'm thinking, "What proxy server?"

So I went into IE Tools > Internet Options > LAN settings and found the box
checked for "Use a proxy server for your LAN."  I unchecked the box and my
problem went away!

I'm guessing the the so called Comcast Connection Wizard did this to me when
I installed the new cable modem.  I sure spent a bunch of time over several
days hunting this down.

problem after unchecking this box.
Weird that it was checked!!!!!another unsure point from IE7?
Anyway, thank you again,
