Reporting Web Page Errors

IE7 will detect errors in web pages - Yellow triangle with exclanation mark
in bottom left corner - and if you hit the Details button you get some useful
information about the problem.

Unfortunately you can't highlight, copy & paste this report into an E-mail
to the relevant webmaster. Better still, would be a button that copied the
report to the clipboard so it could be pasted into an E-mail to the webmaster.

Even better, would be if IE7 could find the contact address for the site's
webmaster and automatically create an E-mail containing the error report and
any other useful information, so that in one click the webmaster could be
notified of any problems.

Hi Duncan,

The Debug Bar will do much of that functionallity. http://www.debugbar.com

Most web sites do not follow the standards and do not set default email
accounts for postmaster and abuse.

Alot of scripting errors are caused by firewalls and hosts blocking of
external scripts, but by far the biggest reason is slack testing by web
designers who refuse to test for cross browser compatibilities, so it is
hard to tell if an error has been caused by a client setting or the loose
nut holding the keyboard at the server.

Regards.

Hi,

You could always do an ALT||Print Screen to capture an image of the dialog
box you are referring to, and then open up your favorite image program and
click on "Edit||Paste" or "Edit||Paste as new Image"(depending on your image
software).  You can then save the image of the dialog box and send it as an
attachment to your email.

Good luck,

Donald Anadell

I hear what you're saying, but it would be just as easy for Microsoft to make it
possible to highlight - copy and paste the contents of the text box within that Page
Error dialogue box.

Better still they could include a Copy button on the dialogue box that copied the
contents of the text box and possibly included the URL from the top, so that if a
webmaster E-mail address was found a simple message explaining the problems and page
could be sent.

Hi Duncan,

I mentioned the screen capture method because I've always been a firm
believer in the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words,
especially when it comes to error dialog boxes

>but it would be just as easy for Microsoft to make it possible to

>Error dialogue box.

There is a way to capture the text only in one of those dialog boxes, a
rather convoluted method at best but I will detail it to you here.

1.  When you see one of those Exclamation marks(!) in the lower left side of
the Status bar as depicted here:
http://users.mikrotec.com/danadell/wwwpages/test/errorbox1.html

2. Double clicking on the Exclamation mark(!) will bring up the Error Dialog
box as depicted here:

http://users.mikrotec.com/danadell/wwwpages/test/errorbox2.html

3.  Hold down the "Shift" key on your keyboard and use your Left Mouse
button to click on the Dialog box so that everything is selected as depicted
here:

http://users.mikrotec.com/danadell/wwwpages/test/errorbox3.html

4. Now hit CTRL + V to copy the selection to the Clipboard.

5. In the document you wish to paste the text hit CTRL + C to copy the
contents of the clipboard into the document.

The resulting paste operation should look something like this:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Line:  2
Char:  11
Error:  Invalid character
Code:  0
URL:  http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=atl&m=8&y=2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good luck,

I tried these suggestions to the letter-it works till #5 to copy it . I would
have pasted the "error on this page" here , but the Edit is greyed out
Cut,Copy,Paste.
However, I now contend, that it is IE7 itself-somewhere as these "Error on
Page Messages" are popping up on every page every time a new page comes up. I
have visited HPackard for this computer and it happens on their sites/pages
also and they say it is an "old computer" and that I should get a new one---I
Recently installed a new hard drive (one month old)and reinstalled XP HOME
Edition SP2----the problem is consistent at the turn of every page/site.  I
am a novice, but the observation is consistent .  Wish I could help .--

Thanks Frank, I'm going to have to hire a proof reader before clicking the

Hi Sohill,

Thanks for pointing out the faux pas(typo) in  my post. Step #4 should read
CTRL + C, and Step #5 should read CTRL + V
