I am having the same issue with IE7 not using my hosts file. Did you ever find an answer to this?
Thanks.

In the first place, learn how to quote posts you are responding to. My
client is configured to purge older posts sooner than the server, so I was
able to find the original post on the server; but I have seen responses to
posts so old that not even Google had the original. Damned hard to figure
out why you are saying what you are saying with no context.
If using a very large hosts file (usually to redirect offensive pages), such
a delay as described could occur, depending upon whether 'lmhosts' is also
being used, and/or the system is in an NT Domain network.
Also, if the redirect IP address is, '127.0.0.1', changing it to '0.0.0.0'
may help. Or going from '0.0.0.0' to 127.0.0.1'.
