I have some sites that do not open properly (Internet Explorer cannot open
this page). I have read the other answers, but this only just occurred
today. When I try to run the "diagnose connection problems" on those pages,
it is greyed out and I cannot run it. Why would this suddenly become a
problem?

Hi Renee,
Where do you live? I am in Australia and there have been connection
disruptions (particularly this morning). I guess it is being caused as
Telstra rolls out their BB2.
For Vista, you Network and Sharing center in the Control Panel provides some
handy diagnostic tools and access to your DSL modem's login page.
Regards.

Am just a "few" miles from you in Western Canada. But, I will try your
control panel, network and sharing suggestions. Thanks.
