I recently got HS internet and had problems with my IE7. I was told to reset
to factory settings. I have done that, scanned for viruses etc turned off
firewalls and tried to reset. Now everytime I try to make google my homepage
in IE, when I go to IE it opens to a blank page that states "about: blank".
When you open google, then internet options to use current, it will work, but
as soon as I go out of IE and bk in it is at the blank page again. Please help

Most security software these days will prevent you from changing your
home page, since spyware just loves to do that. Instead, you have to
change your home page through the security software, by whatever
mechanism it employs.

I have Norton 360, but I have had it for a long time, even with google as my
home page. This all started 3 days ago when I reset my IE. I have deleted all
cookies, files etc, reloaded, still the same thing. Have done it with Norton
off and on. No change.

Do you use Spybot S&D? Spybot has a setting that prevents you from changing your home
page.

Assuming you are using Windows XP, you can try changing your homepage in the registry.
Go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

There is a key called "Start Page". Try changing the data to http://www.google.com .

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS UNLESS YOU ARE COMPLETELY CONFIDENT ABOUT WORKING WITH THE
REGISTRY!!!

Hi Tony,
No I do not have spyboot. I do have windows xp Media. I am not totally
comfortable changing registry. Is that something you could talk me through
dot to dot? I know just enough to scare myself you know.

Get rid of Norton (a disaster waiting to happen) and replace it with the
free AVG or Avast, and Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.

Hi,
Norton 360 could indeed be preventing the homepage change. Look through
settings/options of 360 for something like:
block homepage changes
prevent changes to IE settings
prevent spyware from changing...
etc.

You may be able to make the change in Safe Mode. Norton 360 should not be
running.

Hope this helps,
Don

A well known browser hi-jacker called Cool Web Search has a variant which
gives you just the symptoms you're describing.
Go to http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html  to
download the free scanner for this hijacker and see if that finds something.

good luck

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert.  **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

JUst wanted you all to know that I did have a very well hidden virus in my IE
browser and therefore in the registry. This happened with Norton 360
installed and up to date. Not real happy with that fact, but it is now fixed.
Thanks to all the helpful suggestions.

Glad to hear you were able to remove the virus!
The next step is to get rid of Norton (a disaster waiting to happen) and
replace it with the free AVG or Avast.

Why do you say that?

You responded to PA Bear's post but I think you meant to respond to my
Norton comment.

There are compatibility issues with Norton and Vista even though Symantec
claims otherwise.
