I've got a curious problem with Internet Explorer.
I'm using Windows XP SP2 and I figured out my problem is not concerning a
specific version of IE.

I started out with IE7 running just great for several months but somehow for
the last two days I lost active contents of certain websites.
Windows Update for instance loads, but when the status bar says "done"
there's nothing on the screen. The same happens with the first website IE
shows (in my case doesn't show) after re-installing or resetting IE7,
http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx
Other Microsoft websites like
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx seem to run
without any glitches untill I try to click one of the javascript links
(nothing happens)
Google and many other websites seem to work just fine, untill I run into
scripts.
I don't get error messages, IE doesn't crash, scripts just don't seem to
run.
Adsense advertisements for instance don't show (which would be nice if I
didn't need it to show on websites I'm making myself) and active menu's in
websites don't either.

When I go to http://www.java.com/en/ I'm not only unable to see all the
applets running on the website, I also notice the website being a mess as if
it is missing the CSS file.
https://www.google.com/adsense/ loads, but I don't see the block where I can
fill in my account name and password.

What I've done so far:

- Resetted the Internet Explorer settings in the advanced internet options
menu (several times)
- Restored advanced settings in the advanced internet options menu.
- cleaned all Internet explorer files.
- ran virusscanner (I've got Norton AV running at all times with daily scans
scheduled) to scan on all drives, nothing found.
- ran Hitman Pro throughout the night cleaning the computer of spy- and
ad-ware (I do this every week).
-  lowered security and privacy to lowest settings.
- ran LSPFix and WinSockX.
- re-installed Java (the verification on Java's website tells me
installation was succesfull)
- Un-installed IE7, found same problem with IE6 and re-installed IE7.
- ran installation program for IE7 which tells me it cannot download and
install updates. It tells me to go to the Windows Update site (which of
course doesn't work on my computer).
- and most of this I've done in both normal and safe mode.
- Switched off popup-blocker (though I know it's pretty unlikely that that
is the problem).
- restored system to about a week ago when the problem was not present (very
annoying, lost a lot of installations and still no joy).

As you can see I've done a lot already to fix this problem but nothing so
far has even showed me some improvement.
I'm starting to get pretty desperate to get this to work.
Please, if somebody has an idea as to what could be wrong give me a reply.

ps... I know I know... there's always Firefox, but first... I need IE to
work to make websites and check my pages and second... that's what I'm using
since my IE problems anyways.

The best thing you can do is get rid of Norton (a disaster waiting to
happen) and replace it with the free AVG or Avast, and Windows Firewall and
Windows Defender. See if that solves your problem.

Surely removing Norton would not fix any problems with IE?
I'v disabled it and re-installed IE7 yet again, but no joy this time either.

Yes, it most certainly can.
Disabling Norton is not enough. You need to remove every trace of it.

I'll try, but be aware that the only part of Norton that's installed is a
corp version of Anti-virus, no internet security or firewall software from
Norton.

If Norton came pre-installed there is still a lot of Symantec junk on your
PC. It's not a simple task to get rid of it. If you have registered with
Symantec I suggest you use the Norton Removal Tool.

Norton did not come pre-installed, I never buy pc's with pre-installed
software (because of the tremendous amount of junk pre-installed) I
personally installed the anti-virus software only and this came as one
seperate program, not as part of any suites.

Now after uninstalling Norton AV I re-installed IE7 again and again same
problem.
I'm in the process of re-installing my Norton AV which has always done an
excellent job of stopping any virusses without interfering with my work and
is still in the top of any anti-virus software.

Another thing I tried: switching off all add-ons and switching them back on
one at a time while restarting IE every time.
No joy

You may have yet another horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7.  I
suggest that you...

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html

2a. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

2b. Disable all Norton Add-ons, if applicable.

3. Reinstall IE7 EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install, and using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the installation
source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

4. IMMEDIATELY go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any
critical updates offered.  If a "Root Certificates" update is listed in the
Optional category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of
IE7's additional security.

Thanx for the reply, I'll try it right away.

Well I did the whole deal... twice.
First time everything (EXACTLY) in safe mode while uninstalling everything
from vista transformation pack and windowbliinds through anti-spyware and
symantec anti-virus (of course also the live-update software).
No joy.
Second time in normal startup while using "EndItAll" to close/kill any
remaining useless programs running in the background, and restarting THREE
times after uninstalling and re-installing IE7.
No joy again :(
What also sux is the fact that system restore seems to be affected too, the
window pops up, but doesn't show anything anymore.

It's starting to become a real pain in the coconuts.
My system runs smooth as a baby's bottoms because of the cleanup, but still
not IE7.
Anybody else have any suggestions?

Please?

Disabling Norton is sometimes not enough. Try completely uninstalling it.
Replace with the free AVG or Avast, and Windows Firewall and Windows
Defender.

My god you guys are copy/paste anti-Norton geeks aren't you?
Is this what you guys do all day?
I've fixed the problem!
And Norton didn't have anything to do with it!
Please check the entire thread before blabbering something about Norton just
because you saw it pop up in the original thread!

And oh... this may come as a schock to you, but I've re-installed Norton AV
and... OH NO! THE SYSTEM RUNS SMOOTH AND WITHOUT FURTHER PROBLEMS!

Did you uninstall all Norton Add-ons before uninstalling?

Even if you had, Norton applications are notorious for not uninstalling
cleanly.  Run the removal tool and uninstall again:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

NB: If the problem persists after returning to IE6, IE7 isn't the problem!

EUREKA!

Okay.. forget all the copy/paste answers you'll find in this newsgroup,
here's how I finally fixed it (you can copy it to paste it somewhere else
later :) ):

The whole problem is one of the registry and has absolutely nothing to do
with IE, Norton or other software (if you count Windows out of course).
several scripts were missing or the entry in the registry bad.
What's more, somehow the permissions on the entries were removed which made
it impossible for me to register the scripts.
So here's what to do:

1. download Windows Script 5.6 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C717D943-7E4B-4622-86EB
-95A22B832CAA&displaylang=en

2. download and install SubInACL from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E8BA3E56-D8FE-4A91-93CF
-ED6985E3927B&displaylang=en

3. go to the folder with SubInACL, typically C:\program files\windows
resource kits\tools.

4. create a file in this folder called "reset.cmd" with notepad and enter
the following in this file:

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f

subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f

5. run "reset.cmd", this can take a while so sit back and relax.
What this does is it resets all permission in the registry to default.

6. run the Windows Script 5.6 file you previously downloaded and everything
should be fine after a restart!

If you still have the affected script dll's in your system32 folder, you can
also manually register them by going to START -> RUN and then type "regsvr32
vbscript.dll".
You can do the same with "jscript.dll" or any other script dll you need to
register.

Now I've done all of this in a normal boot (not safe) but I did have all my
protection software (anti-virus, anti-spyware etc) un-installed so I don't
know if this is a must to perform this fix.
I should also add that this is the easy version of the fix.
The harder version would be manually going into regedit and altering all the
nescessary permissions.

Thanx for any previous attempts to help!
