Clash with rundll32.exe

My desktop PC runs Win XP Home + SP2 with all appropriate updates & patches.
I installed IE7 quite some time ago, again with all patches etc.

Some update must have changed things because more recently IE7 freezes
everytime on the same web sites for no apparent reason. It seems that the
more complicated pages can trigger the problem e.g. a real-estate site with
photos, searches, links etc. I have done the usual virus & spyware checks,
but all is OK.

By a process of elimination (aided by EndItAll2) I have been able to find
that there seems to be some clash with the file rundll32.exe which is in
C:\windows\system32. It I use EndItAll to close this file then IE7 will run
these problem pages OK.

My laptop, which is very similar in configuration, does not have the same
problem & only very occasionally freezes with IE7. While the desktop loads
rundll32.exe into memory at bootup, the laptop does not, although it does
have this file in the same location. Both computers have the same version
(5.1.2600.2180) of this DLL.

I have a work-around for the desktop by closing this DLL file when the
problem occurs, but I would prefer a better solution - if there is one.
Additionally, I need to ask if there is likely to be a problem if
rundll32.exe is not running on the desktop as I have found conflicting
information on the Net.

A the name of this EXE implies, it runs DLL files.  If you have a problem with IE then the
problem is NT with RUNDLL32.EXE it is with a DLL that it loads.  Most likely the DLL that it
loads is malicious.

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.pctipp.ch/ds/28400/28470/Multi_AV.exe

http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp

English:
http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/09/scan-your-computer-with-multiple-
anti-virus-for-free/

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode.  It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

What websites?

======================================

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode?  To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b)
all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist?  If it does,
do NOT reinstall IE7.

IE7 (Un)Installation and Anti-Malware Applications:

4. Required reading IMHO before reinstalling IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER!

[And I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.]

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered.  If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

I thank both of you for your replies.

This is an example of one site that always caused problems

http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin/rsearch?a=bhp&t=res

Occasionally IE would freeze as soon as the first page loaded, but mostly it
would freeze when I clicked on the map of QLD and then tried to choose a
suburb on the second page. Over the last couple of months or so IE would
always freeze and never go beyond this page.

I decided to try the easier sugestion first and run IE without add-ons,
something that I just hadn't thought of trying. I found that IE opened the
problem web sites without freezing.

After a lot of trial & error I found the problems in "Add-ons currently
loaded in IE". When I disabled two Skype add-ons I found that IE worked
perfectly. The add-ons were "Skype add-on (mastermind)" and "Skype" both
connected to the file SkypeIEPlugin.dll.

Thanks again for your assistance and the problem now appears to have been
resolved.
