OE6 with Win 98, PC.
A couple of weeks ago I could no longer send emails. I ran an Earthlink
patch and then one of my two addresses worked. They could both receive
mail. Now neither one will receive mail. I get an error msg saying it
failed. I can retrieve them by going through the Earthlink email reader,
but that is extremely tedious, and not a long-term solution. ( I also get
an error msg when I close IE6, which started about the same time.)
P.S. When I stopped receiving mail, all messages were deleted from my
inbox, but not others.

What does the error message say (exactly)?
Have you considered the possibility of infection?

I tried to run ScanDisk. It found the error in Inbox.dbx (in Outlook
Express directory), but was unable to fix it, and never would finish
running. But I found another version of that file in the Mail subdirectory.
I copied it to the OE directory, and now it works! I still can't find all
the messages in the Inbox, but the others are there (e.g., sent messages are
in the Sent Items.dbx file). Does anyone know what the filename is for msg
in Inbox?

The messages are stored on the file Inbox.dbx. There is no separate file
name for each individual message. Messages can be extracted from DBX files
with these programs:
DBXtract ($7): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
There is also a free alternative to DBXtract, though not for DBXpress:
http://www.insideoe.com/resources/tools.htm#macallan
DBXpress: ($25) http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx
