Event Viewer

If this has been asked before in this group, I am unable to find it.

I have been having problems with IE7 freezing on occasion, and ultimately
freezing the computer to where I have to manually turn it off and back on.  I
was trying to check the chain of events that lead up to this happening, but I
find that the "Event Viewer (local) Internet Explorer view is ALWAYS empty.

I cannot find a definitive answer as to why this is happening, other than that
the registry may need tweaking.

Can anyone help so that I can at least see if there are any errors occuring in
IE7?

Thanks

Start your troubleshooting with this:

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. You might have incompatible add-ons:
Go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools
and click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings.  Read this
article first:
How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737
Note that the Reset IE Settings button will delete AutoComplete data (such
as passwords.) Do you have those backed up?

3. Malware already installed on the computer:  Help with malware

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author.  See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything.  Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along.  Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Thanks for all of that Frank.  It will take a while to try the different
suggestions.  I followed the instructions from a post a couple of days ago on a
complete re-install of IE7 because of another issue.  However, it had no effect
on the Event Viewer problem.

I hope you followed these instructions:

Yes, aside from the fact that I don't have Vista, I pretty well followed
everything that is outlined in those links.

I have not had my computer 'freeze' since re-installing IE7.  However, when
looking at the Event Viewer/Internet Explorer, it still says "There are no items
to show in this view."  That's what I'd like to get working.

Thanks

When Internet Explorer 7 was introduced provision was made for an
Internet Explorer log to be added to Event Viewer. SFAIK that is as far
as the bright idea got. No entries are ever recorded in the log so I
guess that it as far as the idea progressed. As Robert has suggested you
need to look at the Warning and Error Reports in  the Application and
System logs in Event Viewer.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
Application and System logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or
Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

All my previous answers about this were probably never voted on
and hence aged out of the archive you're searching.

Here is a Google Groups link to the post that I would have been linking to:

What about the  Application  log instead?   However, if you have to turn off
the computer you have more serious problems than anything which would
be due to just IE7.  E.g., your symptom is probably more driver related,
in which case you should be looking in the  System log and activating diagnostics in that area.

In what way?  That may be how you would activate diagnostics in drivers...  ; )

Robert

I posted some comments direct. Hope they help. When IE7 was released I
pressed Sandi H as to why nothing appeared in the Event Viewer Internet
Explorer log. She did not know.

All I know, is that I un-installed IE7, then followed Frank's suggestions on the
re-install.  I have had absolutely NO problems with 'freezing' since.  Should
this start again, I will post all errors in other logs in the Event Viewer.

Between us all we usually get it right (eventually).
