Hi All
Control Panel > Display > Desktop > Customise Desktop > Desktop Icons
Normally, four check boxes on the applet:
My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer.
Checking box(es) places the item(s) on the desktop or not.
The Internet Explorer check box (and text "Internet Explorer")
is not present on the applet, only the other three.
Two machines this way now.
There is no defined domain or local policy and NoInternetIcon does not exist
in the machines registries.
Have been working on this for quite some time now.
Please Advise how to force it to draw this as it should.
an export of the required keys would be nice.
Thank you in advance

Correct. For some reason, the selection was removed. If anyone knows
why, they ain't telling. You can always make a shortcut from the executable.

Thanks to one and all for the great info!
I see they had a security update, changed the shell and wedged this
modification in with it.
Thanks,

The Internet Explorer check box disappears from the Desktop Items dialog box
after you install the QFE version of security update MS07-061 on a Windows
XP Service Pack 2-based computer

Installing KB943460 removes the Customize Desktop option in WinXP and
Win2K03 machines running IE7. MS hasn't told us why this change was
made...yet.
The Resolution in either http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555849 or
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945402 will place the IE icon back on the
desktop but it will NOT bring back the Customize Desktop option.
The Reg hack cited in both KB articles above may be downloaded from this

Hi James,
The setting has been removed probably due to anti-trust disputes involving
the integration of Internet Explorer into Windows.
Here you can find the registry setting to turn on the IE desktop icon:

(works also on Xp)
Best regards,
