Ad Blocking

Most web sites I visit on IE7, WinXP Home require a while to load.  During
this time the display at the bottom of the screen informs me that various
ads are being loaded from sites like atdt.com, doubleclick.com, etc..  Is
there a way to configure IE7 to block these sites from loading?  If so, how,
and will that have other unforeseen effects?

I checked out my existing Hosts file.  It is already filled with numerous
blocks, apparently placed by Spybot SD.  Should I simply tack on the sites
from the model you referenced to the existing host file?

For what it's worth:

Many people find the Hosts file method useful for blocking advertising.
I do not, for at least three reasons:

1- you are dependent on the judgement of a third party, whose notion of
what does and does not constitute bothersome advertising may not be the
same as yours;
2- (unless you are willing to manually update the Hosts file yourself)
you will be seeing ads while you are waiting for updates to the Hosts
file to be issued; and
3- the web page will not be reformatted and you may see error messages
where ads used to be.

I have other reasons for not preferring the Hosts file method, that have
to do with Flash and other active content.

I personally prefer ad blocking software. This allows me to 'point and
shoot' at ads and have them added to the program's blacklist; it also
makes it easy to selectively block active content; and it can reformat
the page. Good ad blocking software also allows you to kill background
music, animated GIFs and other distractions.

There's nothing wrong with using a Hosts file to block advertising. I
just prefer a different method.

What such program(s) do you recommend?

I don't recommend any programs. What works for me could be terrible for
you. Or maybe I work for a company that writes ad blocking programs. I
suggest you do as I did: search the web, read the reviews, download the
free trials and pick the program that works for you.

Hello,

> What such program(s) do you recommend?

I am developing a free ad blocking solution for Intenet Explorer which is
part of the Quero Toolbar (www.quero.at). The new version of Quero allows
you to only use the ad blocker if you do not want to replace your navigation
bar (configure the appearance of Quero under the menu Quero > Options >
Appearance).

Best regards,
