For years I have used a financial services website to monitor my investment
portfolio (www.moneyextra.com )

For years with Windows XP/IE6 and later with XP/IE7 everything worked (and
still works) perfectly.

I now have another machine running Vista Home Premium SP1 with IE7 which
will not work reliably with this website. When I view my portfolio, some of
the web pages are often incomplete - but sometimes they are complete.

I have tried using the MS User Agent String Utility to emulate IE6 but this
does not work predictably either. Sometimes when I use this utility the
website is incomplete - but when I subsequently open a new browser it is OK.
If I close and reopen the browser the fault usually reappears. The behavior
is unpredictable.

Clearly there is some incompatibility between my Vista/IE7 machine and this
website. The machine works normally on other websites and the website works
correctly with my XP/IE7 machine.

This is beginning to drive me crazy, please has anybody got any ideas on
this?

Hi Malcolm,

Try the UserAgent utilities from http://www.enhanceie.com/useragent.aspx
which can permanently over-ride ie7's UserAgent strings to emulate an
earlier version of IE.

The problem, of course falls back to the web site to provide version
independent (and browser independent) rendering.

I trust this will be the fix for you.

Regards.

Thank you for that Rob, but regrettably I don't think that is the fix. If I
set the UserAgent string to emulate IE6 then my website does not work
correctly, however, if I then close the IE6 emulation and then open IE7 it
works ok *sometimes*. It seems that it isn't IE7 which is the problem, it is
the combination of Vista and IE7. XP with IE7 works fine.

Hi Malcolm,

Try Cookie settings on the Privacy tab of Internet Options. It is hard for
me to test as I do not have an account with the site.

That you can only view part of the page sometimes, seems to suggest that you
may be blocking cookies from third-party sites. Compare your Privacy
settings on your Vista machine to those on your XP machine.

Regards.

Hi Rob

Thank you for your response. I have tried comparing Internet Privacy options
on the two machines (Vista/IE7 and XP/IE7).

In fact the XP machine was set to a lower security but it always works first
time with my website (www.moneyextra.com)

I have tried various tests with the Vista/IE7 machine and the results are as
follws:
1. If I open the website in IE7 it worked correctly in 1 out of 6 attempts
2. If I open the website in IE6 emulation it worked correctly in 0 out of 6
attempts
3. If I open the website in IE6 emulation and then also open in IE7 (or vice
versa) it worked correctly (with the second browser) in 2 out of 6 attempts.

In other words it seems to be almost random, but certainly very
unsatisfactory. Until a solution is found I will have no option but to use
the XP/IE7 machine which is rock solid and works just as it should! Clearly
there is some basic issue here with Vista/IE7.

Thank you for your interest Rob. Can you suggest how I can escalate this to
higher authority in MS for investigation?

Did this problem exist prior to the install of Vista SP1?

Did Windows Update offer Vista SP1 or did you download/install it manually?

Hi PA Bear

I *think* the problem did exist prior to SP1. I downloaded SP1 and installed
it manually. Note that the computer is stable and works well in all other
respects.

See if adding moneyextra.com to your list of Trusted sites makes any
difference.  Otherwise, it sounds like it may be due to a connection issue:
Are you using dial-up?  Any "web accelerators" installed?

The above notwithstanding, I would not recommend installing Vista SP1 unless
and until it's offered to the machine by Windows Updates.  There are all
sorts of reasons why it may not be offered yet:

Hi PA Bear

Thanks for your suggestion.

Tried adding moneyextra.com to the Trusted site list - no difference! Note
that this website works perfectly with a machine running XP/IE7. How can
this be explained?

There are no connection problems. 8 Mb/s cable and no web accelerators.
