Giulio - 09 Jun 2008 22:53 GMT I've IE7 on XP sp2. It crashes loading yahoo webpage. It does not crash without add-on. It seems a stack overflow (maybe in winspool.drv or mshtmled.dll): any idea or suggestion? Tks
Don Varnau - 09 Jun 2008 23:10 GMT Hi, From IE> Tools> manage add-ons, disable one or two add-ons at a time until the problem goes away. That should tell you which is the incompatible add-on.
Reinstalling the troublesome add-on may help or there may be an updated version which won't cause the problem.
Hope this helps, Don [MS MVP- IE]

Done: all add-ons are disabled from ie tools and IE restarted, but it is still crashing on yahoo.it (maybe loading an image) On the other hand, starting IE without addons it does not crash.... =:-)

Is the troublemaking Add-on a McAfee add-on?

Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Advanced settings (RIES) [and then re-enable/installing the Add-ons, one by one]? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

The problem does not persist after reset... I tried to avoid resetting, anyway it is ok, done. What was the problem? I couldn't understand it.

Assuming no other toolbars are installed (e.g., Google; Windows Live; Skype), you might try installing the current (newest) version of Yahoo Toolbar.

I opened another topic because I wanted to point out this new situation... it is ok to follow up here as long as we can find a solution Tks

The cause why IE7 is closing down is completely unclear at the moment... the program is not stable on XPsp2. I would appreciate a concrete help. I had to install Firefox in the meantime and I must recognise that it is working very well on the other hand.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935544/en-us
but I can't download the hotfix because I get http://support.microsoft.com/gp/noscript even if I activeted the script and put the site as trusted. What am I doing wrong?
Moreover I can't apply the workaround because the registry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\UseCoInstall" for me is REG_SZ ("ON") and not DWORD! How can I set it to 0?

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/noscript = There's a Group Policy in place that disallows the use of scripts.
Is this your machine or one that belongs to your employer?

Interesting: which one? I think it is not configured.

Giulio - 13 Jun 2008 21:27 GMT We don't have support for IE7 because we have different standards. Anyway this is not relevant, at the moment I'm writing from one of my personal home pc where I have exactly the same problem: IE7, XP and I don't know how to download the hotfix from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935544/en-us... it should be a trivial question....
> Speak with your IT department. > [quoted text clipped - 25 lines] > >>> set > >>> it to 0? Giulio - 13 Jun 2008 22:09 GMT In the meantime I found the solution (or the workaround ... ;-) ) for this stack overflow of urlmon.dll with IE7 on XP: I simply deleted the UseCoInstall registry and now it doesn't crash any more... HTH
PA Bear [MS MVP] - 14 Jun 2008 00:04 GMT You must request the Hotfix (for WinXP) from MS.

Giulio - 14 Jun 2008 22:09 GMT > You must request the Hotfix (for WinXP) from MS. from the KB: "If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix. " The "Hotfix download available" section does appear: why should I contact MS? There is a problem in the url http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935544/en-us with the script for the download... expected ';' line 169 char 139 ... and the link is redirected to http://support.microsoft.com/gp/noscript (nothing to do with group policies...) After changing to 'United States' ;-) I was able to get http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=935544&kbln=en-us and "Select Product Language Platform Release File name Version Build File size (bytes) (bytes) Modified date Windows Server 2003 English x86 sp3 Fix200564 win2003 3790 1097925 4/22/2007 2:15:51 PM Windows XP English x86 sp3 Fix200565 WxP 2600 1093144 4/22/2007 6:25:25 AM Windows Vista All (Global) x86 sp1 Fix199749 Vista 6000 776618 4/13/2007 11:55:35 PM" Should I request Fix200565 for XP sp3 even if I have sp2?

Anyway I solved my original issue (IE7 crashing on yahoo due to stack overflow of urlmon.dll): I deleted the entry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\UseCoInstall": it works fine!!!
PA Bear [MS MVP] - 14 Jun 2008 22:32 GMT I don't know what's happening on your end (but I suspect a GPO may be involved despite your claim to the contrary).
You MUST request the hotfix and provide your name and email address. If MS approves you for the hotfix, you will be sent downloading instructions via email response.
[NB: A Hotfix is not the same as an update. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824684]
1. Open the link http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=935544&kbln=en-us
2. Agree to the EULA & press the NEXT button.
3. Select the WinXP hotfix.
4. Fill in your name and email address.
5. Fill in characters you see in the appropriate box.
6. Click on REQUEST HOTFIX button to submit your request.
If and when MS approves your request, you will receive an email telling you how to obtain the hotfix (i.e., URLMON.DLL v7.0.6000.20579).
...or be satisfied with the workaround you already have in place.
