That's very interesting. Thanks.
A few more questions before we take more drastic steps:
1. Was Avast Anti-Virus installed on the machine when you bought it?
2. Has a Norton or McAfee application EVER been installed on the machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled on the machine when you
bought it)?
3. Did you purchase the machine directly from the manufacturer (e.g., Dell;
HP) or from a local store or shop? If from a local store or shop, did they
build the machine there? Is the machine still under Warranty or Service
Contract?

1. Avast was not installed. I have installed it
2. No Norton or McAFEE applications are ever installed
3. The machine was build and is still under Warranty. The supplier could not
help me with this problem

How long did you use the machine online (connected to the internet) before
you (1) installed Avast and (2) got the machine fully patched at Windows
Update?
============================
While I'd like you to answer the above question, you can proceed as follows:
1. Disable Avast Anti-Virus.
=> Be CAREFUL! Don't do anything else online (e.g., browsing; email;
chatting) while Avast is disabled!!
2. Uninstall 'Windows XP Service Pack 3' via Add/Remove Programs
How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 3 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950249
3. Reboot *twice* after uninstalling WinXP SP3.
4. If IE7 still crashes *and* starting IE7 in No Add-ons Mode or Resetting
IE7 doesn't stop the crashing:
• Disable Avast again;
• Uninstall "Windows Internet Explorer 7" via Add/Remove Programs, then
reboot *twice*.
Uninstalling IE7
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html
=> Ignore any references to Vista on the above website.
=> Ignore any "Such-and-such might not work properly if you uninstall
IE7" warnings.
5. Uninstalling IE7 will return the machine to IE6. Let me know if
everything's OK now or if IE6 crashes, too.
Please do NOT reinstall IE7 or WinXP SP3 yet.
