Pasting images into Outlook messages leaves a place holder since IE7

Hi,

I posted a similar message a while ago, and also in the Outlook
newsgroup, but still out of luck. I also googled and found I was not
alone, but no solution yet. As of Microsoft, the only article detailing
a similar situation confirms the problem but doesn't offer any solution
(KB200169-jan 2007). Anyways, here is the explanation:

Since we migrated our environment from IE6 to IE7, many users have
complained about getting a place holder instead of images when they
copy/paste between Outlook messages.

Our environment: Win XP SP2 + Office 2003 SP2/SP3

Steps for reproducing the problem:
-in Outlook 2003, double-click a message containing an embedded image,
right-click the image and select COPY
-close the message, create a new message and paste in the body of the
message: a place holder with a red cross is pasted instead of the image

Problem does not occur if any of these conditions is met:
-rollback to IE6 (we won't do this)
-upgrade to Office 2007 (we can't do this)
-the original window (containing the embedded image) stays open when
pasting (few users do that)
-the read pane is open (many users dislike the reading pane and
deactivate it)
-Word is the default email editor (it is not the case in our company)

The last three points are workarounds, not solutions. We have 2000+
users, I am looking for a definitive fix.

Any idea?

Patient (demonstrating): "Doctor, it hurts when I do this!"
Doctor: "Don't do that."

Don't do that: Save the image to the HDD then embed the saved image manually
in other emails.

Well doctor, this feature worked in IE6 and before, and still works in
IE7 with Office 2007. Users have done this for years, and there is no
reason they shouldn't be able to continue doing something so elementary
as a copy/paste of images in Outlook. This has worked in each and every
version of Outlook (and still works is as long as you don't install
IE7). The moment you install IE7, it's gone. As far as I am concerned,
this is called a bug.

Sounds like you've found other workarounds.

What was recommended in that thread and which have you tried?  You don't
give us a clue, Lo.

==============================================

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode?  To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer's (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 *exactly* per the link below (which
automatically returns you to IE6), (b) all toolbars and (c) all third-party
Windows Themes (including Window Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this
behavior persist?  If it does, do NOT reinstall IE7.

Uninstalling IE7

[Only use the Command %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot
uninstall via Add/Remove Programs!]

4. Required reading IMHO before reinstalling IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Direct Download link:

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

5. Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered.  If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

Thanks PA for the detailled troubleshooting steps. Ok, so here are some
answers:

> What was recommended in that thread and which have you tried?

Basically, the only meaningfull reply was about troubleshooting through
the use of Clipboard. I discovered that if I copied the image in Outlook
and pasted it in Word 2003, I was getting the place holder; BUT if I did
a paste/special and selected DIB instead of HTML, the image was pasted.
No problem in WordPad: it naturally seems to paste in DIB format. So the
Paste special/DIB format is yet another workaround when pasting images
from an Outlook message to an Office app. However, Paste special is not
available (greyed out) when pasting from within Outlook 2003, and this
is the main reason for this post.

Yes!

Yes again.

Not tested exactly as you recommend. The thing is, we will not rollback
to IE6 (3000 workstations). The way I uninstalled a few workstations (in
order to identify the problem) was simply through add/remove programs.
These tests showed that as soon as IE7 was uninstalled, copy/paste of
images worked fine again in Outlook 2003.

I read through all the steps, and I believe I respected most of theses
advices before deploying IE7.

Our workstations are supposed to be updated regularly (7.0.5730.11)

One final note: as mentionned in my first post, I searched the Net and
discovered identical issues. Also, among the few (and almost only)
replies I received for my first post were people confirming the problem.
If you have Win XP SP2/Office 2003/IE7, then you should be able to
replicate the problem. All you have to do is make sure Word editor is
turned off and read pane is off. Then open a message with an embedded
image. Right-click and copy the image. Close the message. Create a new
message and paste. You shuld experience the place holder. If you send
the message as is, the recipient also receives the place holder.
However, areference also appears next to the red cross, in the form of
"cid:image002.png@01C8CA4A.38FB0C0"

I guess that's the best I can say for now. Thanks for your support.

Cannot reproduce here, Lo, but I'm running Office 2003 SP2, not Office 2003
SP3.  (Long story...)

It doesn't matter, SP2 and SP3 react the same. I get place holders in
Outlook 2003 Sp2 AND sp3 as soon as IE7 is installed.

Again, I do NOT see this behavior!

You can use your workarounds to refine the symptom description.
E.g. it looks as if the problem is a question of when temporary files
are cleaned up.   What would be interesting knowing is what is different
about the Office 2007 case?  E.g. are the temporary files opened and kept
in a different location?   How do they eventually get cleaned up then?  Etc.

You could use  FileMon  to see just the file usage and  RegMon  to supplement
it with related registry accesses or you could use  ProcMon  to integrate both
traces and make them more usable.   If you're lucky you may find that there
is an undocumented "compatibility switch" available for you to use...   <eg>

FWIW I don't see a bug here, just a loss of opportunity to continue misusing
something which was obviously broken and now apparently is fixed in at least
one case.

Good luck

I am not familiar with the tools you are mentionning and I am not too
excited at debugging Outlook's glitches, but I may give it a try
nonetheless. Thanks,
