Re-install Internet Explorer 7 on Vista

I'm having trouble with Vista SP1, the latest IE 7 and the new Java 6 update
6 update. Can anyone help?
IE 7 crashes *every* time I update to Java 6.6 and then validate the
installation or access a Java-enabled Web site. This happens whether I use
the "on-line" or "offline" Java installers. Each time it crashes, I get the
"Data Execution Prevention" screen rearing its ugly head. I get no errors
other than "Internet Explorer has stopped working". I'm then allowed to close
it.
I've followed MS's instructions on how to "reset" IE 7's settings, but while
it did waste 5 minutes, it didn't help.
Java 6.5 wasn't a problem, and Firefox 2.0.0.14 runs fine with Java 6.6 on
the same machine.
While IE 6 wasn't "officially" able to be uninstalled on Windows XP, I know
MS had a way of tricking XP into thinking IE 6 wasn't there, so you could
re-install it. Is there *anything* like that for IE 7 on Vista? I've had a
few other problems with it (such as it crashing when I accept the ActiveX
software for logmein.com), so if I could just start over with it, I'm sure
I'd be better off.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Hi,
Try uninstalling all versions of Java and reinstalling the current version
per this post:
http://www.aumha.net/viewtopic.php?p=190298#p190298

Just a question- not a recommendation... Is UAC (User Account Control)
enabled on your computer?

Hope this helps,

Don,
Thanks, but I've ripped out all previous versions of Java, and no, UAC is
not active on the machine.
Again, Firefox doesn't have a problem with any version of Java, so I don't
think the problem is with Java.

Hi,
Try runnning JavaRa- http://www.aumha.net/viewtopic.php?p=190298#p190298

Try installing Java with UAC enabled.

Thanks, Don!
JavaRa didn't find much, but between that and enabling UAC, I was able to
get Java 6 update 6 to work.
JavaRa found two old files that it couldn't remove in the \system32
directory. (I use Revo Uninstaller to clean the machine before any Java
updates, so there wasn't much left.) But, somehow between that and enabling
UAC, it all works!
Thanks again, but I'm still wondering if there's a way to re-install IE 7? I
don't know if I'll still have my ActiveX problems after all this, but I still
don't feel IE 7 is "fixed".

Hi,
IE7 can't be reinstalled on Vista- SFC is the closest you can get to a
reinstall.
936212- How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating
system configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212/en-us

Your ActiveX problem is probably not due to corrupted IE files or a bad
installation of IE7. Another program may be contributing to the logmein
problem- perhaps a security program attempting to block the ActiveX control.
Are your Security> Internet zone settings at default levels? Have you
checked with logmein support? Are there known issues with logmein and
IE7/Vista?

Well, this was a brand-new machine with a fresh Vista installation. It didn't
even have SP1 on it yet, and logmein.com's ActiveX control wouldn't install
without IE 7 crashing. IE 7 had all the default settings in place, since it
was a new installation.
Firefox had no problem with the logmein.com software, though it used Java to
accomplish the remote control, since it doesn't support ActiveX. So, I'm
using Firefox for logmein.com, and IE 7 for most other things. (Now that I've
"reset" IE 7, I guess I can try the ActiveX control again, just for old
times' sake....)
I was hoping there would be some way to trick Vista and be able to
re-install IE 7. Kind of makes you wonder what people are going to do if an
IE 7 file or Registry entry becomes corrupt or deleted.
Thanks again for all your help, Don. At least this problem is solved!

Just to chime in here...

IE 7 is not a separate program that you install on Windows Vista. So the
typical 'just reinstall the program' advice does not apply. Internet
Explorer is part of the operating system. So your question really is:
"Kind of makes you wonder what people are going to do if an /operating
system/ file or registry entry becomes corrupt or deleted."

If this happens you usually have to reinstall the operating system (or
restore a backup.) If you know specifically which file or registry entry
is corrupted or missing, you may be able to extract the file (e.g. from
your installation DVD) or re-create the registry entry.

Operating system files do not generally get corrupted or go missing,
because of the operating system's built-in protections and because most
users have security software that would stop or at least flag that kind
of activity. Malware can and will attack the operating system but it
still has to overcome the user's security setup.

Hi,
Many OEM computers come with one or more third-party security programs
installed (McAfee, Norton, etc.) Did yours? I would try to rule out a
third-party program as the cause of the ActiveX problem.
