marina - 13 Jun 2008 02:56 GMT I am running Windows XP(2) with IE7 (Version 7.0.5730.13). I don't know if it is a coincidence or not....but I started having problems after the 6/10/08 update. I had Google as my default search engine and it stopped working. I tried to go to the Google website from the address bar and the icon on the tab just spins or I get the "page could not be found" error. In Manage Add-Ons I disabled Google toolbar and then tried to address bar it to Google. Same problem. I have uninstalled Google from Add/Remove Programs and added Yahoo as the search engine and Yahoo works fine. But I want my Google. I also am having trouble going to other trusted sites I visted before, such as aumha.net. Same results as for Google. Husband has also mentioned having similar issues with some websites. What should I do? Should I uninstall IE7 and reinstall? Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance.

rob^_^ - 13 Jun 2008 09:59 GMT Hi Marina,
You can quickly test if an Addon is causing a problem in IE7 by running it in noAddons mode - Start>(All) Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (No Addons).
Such a widespread blocking of specific websites however does not point to Addon incompatibility, rather a networking or firewall problem or at the very worst a virus infection (see below).
Try running the Diagnose connection problems utility on the Tools menu of IE to troubleshoot if it is a network or firewall problem.
I trust that your Windows update was an automatic update from the Windows update site and not one of those spam email that we all receive that pertain to be the latest MS patch? If you did apply a so-called patch from an email received then more than likely you have been infected by a virus.
Windows updates are NEVER distributed by email!
Regards.

On the IE Tools menu, though, it still showed up as all the Add Ons enabled. I could not find Diagnose Connection Utility under IE-Tools. I have Zone Alarm Security Suite and when I ran a full virus scan and spyware scan yesterday it informed me of the following Spyware: Win32.Trojan.Yspy - Found. Suggested Deletion, which I did. I am running a Panda Active Scan right now on the computer in question (I am on my daughter's networked computer--which is running real slow). On problem computer (even on this discussion page) I get a yellow shield is the lower left corner saying "Done", when the page won't move. For example, when I'm trying to go through thread. Just checked Panda (which is at 13%) and it has found 19 infections so far. When it is done scanning I will get back to you.

I just tried to go to www.google.com from daughter's networked computer and I can't get there from this computer either. Firewall? Virus? Just more info for you to chew on.

That should be Tools>Diagnose Connection Problems - IF it is disabled it means that you have an active connection, so that is not the problem.
There are known issues with Zone Alarm and IE7, but I do not use it so I cannot comment as to a possible solution. Try switching it off. From memory, when I did have it installed, there is a list of sites that it blocks access to. Also check with the Zone Alarm site for any updates for their software.
I am afraid that I am out of options to suggest to you, but I have a feeling that your Zone Alarm settings may be the root cause.
Regards.

Thanks for trying. Maybe it's time for Firefox!

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log to an appropriate forum.
Checking for/Help with Hijackware http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm http://aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=5878 http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Removal_and_Prevention:_Introduction http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/data/prevention.htm http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/tshoot.html http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm http://defendingyourmachine2.blogspot.com/ http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware
When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2 (http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22, http://castlecops.com/forum67.html, http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7, http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or other appropriate forums for review by an expert in such matters, not here.**
If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

When I was just about ready to give up, I was reading other threads with similar problems, and one of the posters suggested resetting your modem and router. Usually that's the first thing I do when I encounter a problem but somehow I didn't think it would work for this one. But, voila, I did it and it worked. I got my Google back and an I can get to auhma.net. Why I lost my ability to connect to these two sites is the mystery of Internet Explorer. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to respond and help me.

While the modem/router resets may have fixed your problem, it may only be temporary. Post your HijackThis log in an appropriate forum for a thorough review, please.

I unpluued the modem to block my cpu from teh internet, loaded the Windows default firewall protector, reconnected the modem power and boom!, it works. I will try searching Zonealarm to see if they've responded to the new MSFT update with a patch or something (not very cpu savy myself). WIll post updates if I see the,
