upgrade problem? internet explorer

I recieved an automatic security upgrade on 12-06-08 to internet explorer,
then i had problems openeing web pages. I removed the security upgrade and
now working fine. Does anyone know of any issues with security upgrade o rwas
it a coincidence ?

Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from
Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed":

If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings don't help, try the
following [skip #2 and #3 if you haven't reinstalled KB950759]:

1. Disable your anti-virus application, all Norton Add-ons (if any), any
real-time protection provided by an anti-spyware application (except for
Windows Defender; includes Spybot Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS
guard.exe, etc.), disable any third-party firewall AND THEN enable the
Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus
application has been re-enabled!  If you're running ZA Free firewall, you
may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it.

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB950579)"
via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right)
and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical Updates
offered.  If  a Root Certificates update is listed in the Optional Updates
category, install it to take full advantage of IE7's enhanced security.

5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if
applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable (or reinstall) your
third-party firewall.

Definitely not a coincidence!

This happened to me the last couple times there was a MS security
upgrade.  The problem lied with my Norton not reacting to the upgrade
properly.

I happen to use Norton 360, but I am sure the result wold be the same
for a Mcafee or other Norton product or the like.

In addition to what PA Bear wrote - I'd recommend the following:

1)  Make sure you have a copy of Mozilla Firefox browser!  Firefox
does NOT go down when all this happens and will allow you to get to
the net while IE is down.   It also has few problems with internet
attacks, unlike IE7 so you'll be fairly safe using it even while your
3rd party protection is down.  Browsing should be fairly safe, but I'd
follow PA Bear's advice on not reading emails or downloading files etc
where yo could get a virus.  THe safety lies in people not writing
malicious things that attack firefox.

2)  If fiddling with settings etc as discussed in PA's article doesn't
work, uninstall and re-install your security software. This has been
the solution for me both times.  Once that was finished everything
went back to normal.

This last time around I spent hours on the phone with Norton trying to
resolve this until we finally went to the uninstall de-install
method.  It's something that neither they NOR Microsoft are really
prepared for in my opinion.  And BOTH should do something about it:

A) Microsoft has a KB article explaining that the security SW is the
likely problem....however, if I only had IE as a browser I'd never be
able to get to that article to find out!

- I believe (are you reading this MS by chance?) that they should send
you a warning with security updates that this problem may occur and
that fixes to your security SW may be required... BEFORE / DURING the
push of the update.

- Also, Norton/Symantec was caught with their pants down.  They really
weren't aware of what was going on and I spent 4 hours ripping them a
new one as we troubleshot the problem.  Seemes to me that the Norton/
cAfees of the world ought to be aware of this and send you immediate
updates/notifications etc whenever a security update comes out - and
have a simple set of instructions on the best way to deal with this
with your particular software.

Hope that helps and that people at the SW companies might read this!

Your firewall is blocking Internet Explorer from internet access because
it is set to 'auto' so any change to Internet Explorer appears malicious.
