Search from Address bar

Dear NG:

Win XP SP3
IE 6 latest patches.

I have the Address bar setup as a toolbar anchored to the top of my desktop.
I find it very handy for internet searches.

Recently, I've noticed that if I type a search string into the Address bar
(toolbar), IE opens and shows the results on Roadrunner's (my ISP) search
page instead of MSN's, as it use to do.

Let's say I type Microsoft in the Address bar (toolbar), and select: Search
for "Microsoft" from the drop down menu.  The text in the Address bar
changes to
http://auto.search.msn.com/response.asp?MT=Microsoft&srch=6&prov=&utf8 and
IE opens to Roadrunner's search page with
http://ww23.rr.com/search.php?search=Microsoft&src=1 in IE's Address bar.

I've gone through all of the customizations and preferences for Search in
IE.  They seem to have no effect on which search site the Address bar
(toolbar) uses.

I've checked the Registry setting for IE's auto-search:
HKEY_CURRRENT_USER\Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer\SearchURL, it
currently reads: http://home.microsoft.com/access/autosearch.asp?p=%s

I'd like to know if I can change the search site that the Address bar
(toolbar) on my desktop uses, back to MSN or for that matter, change it to
which ever search site I like?

Thanks,

-Kevin

P.S. I've come across a work-a-round using TweakUI Search prefixes but I'd
still like to learn what happened and if anyone knows how to restore the
Address bar (toolbar) search site.

NB: The ISP software you may have installed may have overriden IE6's
settings and options.

Thanks for your response.

I've gone through ALL of IE's preferences and customization settings to no
avail.

Roadrunner doesn't require any software which makes this all the more
perplexing.

Changing/selecting Search defaults & options is much improved in IE7.

The following may work in IE6:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-en/default.mspx

If you'd like to make Google your default, see

&prov=  is not set.  Are you trying to get a random provider?   <eg>

Since you didn't specify one where else do you think  MSN
should send you?   ; )

Robert,
You're right, I didn't set or specify anything.  All I did was type
"Microsoft" in the address bar (toolbar) and select Search for Microsoft
from the drop down list.

The top link is what the text in the toolbar changed into after hitting
Enter and the bottom link is what IE opened to and displayed in its Address
field.

I've merged the file suggested by PA bear [MS MVP] at
http://www.google.com/options/defaults.html
Since merging the above file, I DO get Google as the search site when
clicking on Start > Search  >  Search the Internet.

However, when I type "Microsoft" in the Address bar (toolbar) and select
Search for Microsoft from the drop down list, the text changes to:
http://auto.search.msn.com/response.asp?MT=Microsoft&srch=6&prov=gogl&utf8

In the above link it appears that &prov= is set to gogl, however the
resulting IE window remains:
http://ww23.rr.com/search.php?search=Microsoft&src=1

This is not the end of the world by any means, but I would be curious to
find out how to set the autosearch feature either back to MSN or some other
search site or at least find out why it's being redirected to Roadrunner's
site.

According to the Google article, for some reason it only changes
the  Address bar  search for  IE4  users:

<quote>
For IE4 only, you can type "? <search terms>" in the URL box
instead of a URL, and it will perform the search.
</quote>

I doubt you have to be limited like that but would have to run  RegMon
to find out what the alternatives are.

Is your IP address associated with that domain?
If the request is actually reaching MSN perhaps that is just
MSN's way of indicating that it doesn't want to provide its
search forwarding service any more?...

Hmm...  I see the same sort of thing but with a  dnserror  host name
associated with my ISP!    ; )

Looks like  Microsoft  is now only interested in supporting Live Search
that way.   That's my default search and entering  ? Microsoft  in the IE7
Address bar produced this URL:

http://search.msn.com/results.asp?FORM=sCPN&RS=CHECKED&un=doc&v=1&q=microsoft

If you don't want to investigate hacking an alternative using  RegMon
the simplest solution would be to use an  Address bar  shortcut
(e.g. the GG that the Google article mentions)  instead of the usual  ?.
BTW you don't need to use  QuickSearch (or RegEdit)  to do that
customization.   XP's Tweak UI  can be used instead.

HTH
