Lately, whenever I try to bring up IE7, a window pops up titled "iexplore.exe
- Bad Image" The message inside the box says
"C:\Windows\AppPatch\iebrshim.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or
it contains and error..... If I click on the OK button IE will open but does
not bring up my home page until after about 1 1/2 minutes has elapsed. After
that it appears to work normally. Any thoughts on how I can fix this Bad
Image problem? I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium with all of the
important updates, but not the recommended or optional ones.

The error is related to Flash Player, not IE or Windows.  See this

I went to the thread you indicated and performed the following operations:

1) I don't have Windows update #939653 installed, nor is it in the list of
hidden updates.

2) I reset IE settings

3) I uninstalled/reinstalled Flash Player v9.0.124.0

None of the above solved the bad image problem, but in looking at the
iebrshim.dll file with Windows Explorer I notice that the file size is 0
bytes and the version number is blank. This can't be good. How do I get an
updated version of the file?

That's an older IE update referenced in an outdated thread: Is KB950759
installed?  If so, when was it installed and did this behavior first start
after it was installed?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?  What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?  What third-party firewall
(if any)?

Are you presently running Vista or Vista SP1?  Did you upgrade to Vista
from, e.g., WinXP?

What is your home page? Does the behavior persist if you select a BLANK home
page?

If you close all IE windows and DELETE C:\Windows\AppPatch\iebrshim.dll
<=this file, and then open IE to your usual home page, does the behavior
persist?

I tried deleting the iebrshim.dll file but the system would not do it even
after I gave permission to do so. It just keeps asking me to try again.

KB950759 was installed on 6/11/08 which was about the time I started having
this problem, so I uninstalled it and restarted the computer. The
iebrshim.dll file is now 52 KB and shows a version number of 6.0.6000.16643.
I no longer get the Bad Image error message when starting Internet Explorer
and the browser seems to work okay again.

Thank you so much for your interest and help.

YW, but we're not done yet!  Your computer remains vulnerable to several
exploits without KB950759 installed.  Please answer the rest of my
questions.

I'm running Vista SP1 and it is NOT an upgrade from a previous version of
windows. My IE home page is yahoo.com, but the problem persisted even when I
changed it to a blank home page.

My virus/firewall software is McAfee Security Center provided through
Comcast. In addition to Defender, I'm running Spyware Doctor and Registry
Mechanic from PC Tools.

I've temporarily made KB950759 a hidden update until this issue is resolved.

I received an email from Microsoft on 6/28/08 asking me to manually download
and install the KB950759 update from their download center at the following
address:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6D68B39D-157F-4C3D-AC76
-BC5A9386DB59&displaylang=en

I tried it and it works. The installed iebrshim.dll file now shows a version
number of 6.0.6000.16681, and IE opens to my home page without the Bad Image
error message.
