Can narrator read the text of, say, a newspaper article on a Web page?

Have you tried it?

Yes, Leonard, I've tried it. Narrator seems to read the page title, toolbars,
address bar, etc., but never gets down to the text in the window.

I've even tried copying and pasting the text of the article into a MSWord
doc and attempting to have Narrator read it from that file, to no avail. In
this case, I get a notificaton that the file is "empty."

Works fine for me. I just have it read the 'print' version.

If you're really interested in screen reader software, I suggest
searching the web for third-party software. Windows Narrator has only
basic functionality.

I tried having Narrator read the "print" version also, Leonard, but it didn't
work for me.

I've checked out third-party software such as Dragon Dictate by Nuance but
am not too crazy about putting out the money.

As far as being "serious" about text to speech, I'm fully capable of reading
a page but had hoped that I might be able to enjoy the convenience of text to
speech from time to time. I searched the notebook's capabilities, found
Narrator, and had hoped that it would serve the purpose.
