Thanks for the reply. This is the sequence of events :-
1. Installed IE7 when it was released
2. Installed SP3 a few weeks ago
3. Upgraded to Grisoft AVG8 from previous version about a week ago
4. Replaced an old version of McAffee Firewall with Comodo a few days ago
McAffee Firewall would have been running during previous installs, but I've
never had any problems with it before. I have a couple of spyware programs
but I only use them for scanning 'on-demand'.
I didn't notice any problems until yesterday. It seems to be getting worse.
I'm getting terrible flickering in IE on some sites, particularly this one :-
http://uk.ign.com/
and when I click on the 'read mail' icon in IE I get a message saying
'cannot acess the specified device, path or file'.
In order:
1. Download/run this McAfee removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=4105&partner=McAfee&type
=TS&ia=1
2. Reboot.
3. Uninstall any/all third-party toolbars (e.g., Google; Yahoo; MSN; Windows
Live; Skype; Roboform) via Add/Remove Programs.
If the unwanted behavior persists, continue as per the below:
4. Download a fresh copy of the installer for AVG 8.0, saving it to your C:
drive (i.e, C:\avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1295.exe) =>
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe or
http://www.grisoft.cz/filedir/inst/avg_free_stf_en_8_100a1323.exe
5. Uninstall AVG 8.0 via Add/Remove Programs & reboot again.
NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've got AVG 8.0 installed,
properly configured, and updated!
6. Carefully follow these instructions to (re)install AVG 8.0:
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1338
Tip: Do NOT install the toolbar (if offered) or either of the email
scanners. Email Scanning provides no additional protection, it's a major
source of corruption and problems in Outlook Express/Windows Mail, and even
Symantec(NAV) says it's not necessary:
QUOTE: Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against
viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus
Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive,
including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer
on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum
protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure
that you have the most recent virus definitions.

7. Configure AVG as you wish via the User Interface | Tools | Advanced
settings
8. Check for and install any available AVG updates.
Any problems now?

Thanks for the reply. I think I've managed to solve it. The problem with the
tabs was caused by Comodo having the wrong security setting for IE. It was
working when I first installed it so I don't know how it got like that. In
addition, the screen flickering was caused by Flash. Again I don't know why
it suddenly went wrong, but I removed & reinstalled it and everything seems
to be OK so far...

I think it was listed as an "isolated application" in the "defense+" section.
I'm not sure whether it did that automatically or whether I accidentally
clicked on something in one of the dozens of windows that it keeps displaying.
